i have tried and have been very happy with the f,f and quality of colt and rr knives and decided to try bucks offering. well fit and finish of bucks' canoe when closed were fine the problem occured when opening and closing the main blade. intially the main blade was gritty feeling upon opening. after a few workout sessions that issue cleared up. and now after cleaning and oiling the main blade has no "snap" whatsoever. the blade is "lazy" as if it has a weak backspring. the knife has let me down in its funcitonality. i will be sending it back for repair. has anyone else had this problem with the "new" bucks having a weak back spring? there isnt any snap when closing the knife. i have taken a new job, at a lower rate due to the economy and am trying some "value" priced knives. but this example seems to prove that "you get what you pay for" my rr's are fine and the colt brand is even better. i will report bac on the outcome at a latter date.

I bought a Buck stockman at Wally World about 2 weeks ago and I think it was a good deal. I was happy with it. F&F was good. Blades were easy to open which I like. I could pinch all 3 blades open. Probably like a lot of over sees companies hit and miss.

Not sure what you mean by "the 'new' bucks," but if you're referring to the Bucks made in China, I've read an awful lot of positive things about them. At any rate, Buck will stand by its warranty and make things right. Send it back for repair and let us know how it turns out. I'd bet dollars to donuts the company makes you a happy customer.

I've handled only one Buck Canoe, which was gift for my girl friend. It has really tight back springs making very loud snap when opened or closed, only problem it had was the right side scale was portruding over the bolster. Bit sanding it went nice and smooth.

Its been while ago though. There's monday speciment in all knives. Buck has great warranty. Send it for them, Buck will make it right.

Dang, all this talk about Buck slipjoints re-light my graving for 303 Cadet... Oh, well, next year :D

I have a Buck Canoe. Edc'd it for about 6 months. Really liked it. EXCEPT, you guessed it, spring broke. Second Chinese knife with broken spring.

It has been pointed out to me that my above "spelling error" could be at best politically incorrect.

My apologies to anyone of the Asian persuasion or anyone else who may have been offended. :foot: My only intention was to poke fun at the hot-button Chinese knife issue. As noted I have several and am generally happy with them.

I understand spring mfr., qc and temper is rather a black art and perhaps one our Asian friends have yet to master.

got the knife back yesterday from buck. less than 2 weeks total. blade has a little more snap but was told it was a discontinued model and they cleaned, polished, sharpened and did what they could. overall, im happy.

Good to hear.
I'm waiting for a Yellow delrin Companion, kind of pen-knife. I hope the F&F will be OK on this. Don't own a lot of Bucks but the ones I have, fixed and lockback have pleased me a lot: simple, well made and not shoddy. Hope the Companion is the same.

guess i just spoiled by the f & f of colt's an r.r.'s offerings that i got mad when i recv'd an inferior buck product. but buck made it all better. at the time i phurchased the knife i was un-employed and trying the off-shore brands to help feed my slippie addicition. now that i am working again i will save for an american made slippie. but your yellow delrin should be usa made from what i saw on their web site. so you should have no worries.

Well,

What can I say. I will agree that it 'SEEMS' I hear the the joint is gritty as a common Buck new knife complaint. I blow them all out with air compressor and oil everyone just for good measure. The poster was dealing with a off-shore made knife. I have seen several 3" Buck Stockman from across the sea and all I have handled are tight and sharp.

You shouldn't have to send a knife back in the new state or one thats been used normally, but Buck is good about going the extra mile.

Buck off-shore slipjoints are made to fill the market area that requires a knife be in the price range they are. Sort of a 'starter' Buck. Folks on a budget or who 'trash' a pocketknife need a selection in that price range. You sit with any of the top Buck people and talk about the China/USA issues and you will come away with the feeling they are trying to bring everything home , someday, without losing that area of the market. You watch, some day they will move it all to Idaho and everyone will be scrambling to collect the discontinued offshore Bucks. Go figure.

Maybe I'm close minded to Chinese made Buck knives but if they are not made in the USA they have lost me as a customer. I believe the 119 and 110 are still made here, I hope.

Most Bucks are usa made. 119, 110's, 112's, nighthawk's 50x bucks, 55's and buck 30x-series are USA made to mention few. 3xx's are imported.

Thank you, Jani for supplying that info.

Let's now leave the USA vs. off-shore debate at this juncture as it has been beaten to death and is not appropriate grist for the mill that is this sub-forum. Thank you.

If the springs are improperly heat treated to the wrong RC,the harder blade will gouge the spring. They may have made this mistake on a mass production scale ?

Buck 30X slipjoints have softer springs. As one poster mentioned it makes all blades easy to pinch open. In use it is really not an issue for me, just different

I've experianced the 'soft' springs on Buck pocket knives, and I like that. As long as the knife blade closes, it'll work. With some arthritis issues, I don't want to fight with my knife to open it, so soft springs are fine with me. Even when I bought my first buck, a stockman in 1967, it was softer in the springs than a Case or Schrade of the era.

The mechanics of the cutting will keep it open, like a friction folder, so I don't worry if its a bit soft in the springs department.

Carl.
