New Buck/Strider 882SBTG "tightness".

Hi all,
I just got a new 882SBTG and was wondering if it's common for the blade to be a bit tight to open until broken in. It feels smooth but it's tight. I loosened the pivot screw and put a drop of oil in there but still tight to open. I also noticed that the bronze bushing on the liner lock side of the blade is twice the thickness of the bronze bushing on the opposite side of the blade. Just curious why the two bushings are different thicknesses. I did try the search feature but found nothing. I do love this knife though..... built very tough.

The blade should operate smoothly with no side to side play but should not be overly tight.

There is a small boss on the liner lock that does ride against the blade as it rotates. The blade may show subtle signs of contact with this boss in the pivot area. However, I'd examine the pivot area to see if there are perhaps some signs of more extreme abrasion. Something else may be dragging against the blade that shouldn't be.

The difference in the bushing thickness is to accommodate the liner lock mechanism.

Thanks Mike. I'll take a look at the pivot area as you said. It definitely needs more force to open than any of my other folders. Also, thanks for shedding some light on the different bushing thicknesses.

Mark at All American...
One of my 889SBMF knives had a pivot problem right outta the 'chute. I took it apart and found that one of the bushings had some black gunk on it. Like an adhesive. Don't know for certain what it was. But I cleaned it off with some WD40, put it back together and it works fine.

IF you field stip it, you can also try to push in (a bit) the liner lock with the boss that Mike wrote about. You will also find that you may need some patience in getting it back together as the bushing holes are not stamped with a circle, but a "D" shape to be positioned properly on the pivot.

Also, be certain that the thicker bushing is put on the liner lock side.

Technically, once you monkey with it, you may be voiding your warranty. So, you may just want to send it to Buck for a tune up.

Your mileage may vary...

I THINK YOU MAY HAVE IT IN YOUR FIRST LINE. MINE SEEMED A BIT TIGHT AT FIRST BUT SEEMS TO BE SMOOTHER AFTER SOME USE. NOT SURE IF THIS IS COMMON.

Thanks for the info gents. I'll see if it looseness up a bit and if not I'll take it apart and see what's holding it up. Warranty or not I can't see sending it in to Buck. Other than it being a bit tight she's performing just fine.

One more quick question if anyone is still reading..... where is the "ideal" spot for the liner to lock up on the tang when the blade is deployed? Mine locks up dead center of the blade but as I said it's still brand new for the most part.

Thanks again Mike.
I've been trying to use the search function but for some reason I keep getting a blank screen. I'm logged in and I had no problems with the search function first thing this morning but now nothing. I'll try logging out then back in and see if that works. Thanks for the link in the mean time.:D

"Click on "Search This Forum" (in the Forum you want searched); then click "Advanced Search"; select "Search Titles Only"; and put your subject in the keyword field. If you search all of Bladeforums for every occurrence of the subject that will overload the search function and you'll get no results, but if you follow those directions you'll find what you want."
