Hi all, i just purchased a Buck Strider Fixed Blade spear point, one of the last ones it town i think. bought it for $99 + tax for sale at a mall knife shop. That a good price for one of these?

I can remember reading stuff about the knife but i've been looking everywhere (forums searches, google, etc.) and cant find much about them other than they are made of 420HC steel and that they were a collaberation between Buck and Stider.

Mine came in a Buck box, it has the Strider Symbol with the wings and a "sword"?, SB5, and BOS with the flames, and USA markings on it.

Im looking to find the following info please:

Have they been discontinued? and if so would it be prudent to keep as an investment blade, not a user?

How did the collaberation work between the two companies? did strider build it and its sold under Buck name or what?

Is the 420HC its made of tough enough for serious work it would be put to in the mountains? Along with that, i also wonder if the 420HC is equal to or less than the Sandvick 12C27 that my Geber LMF II is made from?

Were there any tourture test done by any of our forum members that i could read?

And Last, what are some opinions of the knife by any that have one?

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can give! -- Eric

You will have much better luck with your question if you post it in the Buck forum over in the Manufacturers section. I'll take a shot at some of your questions though.

It sounds like you got a good price on your knife especially considering it came for a mall shop. They are notorious for having high prices. I personally would'nt save that knife as an investment. But I don't buy any knife as an investment. There are much better ways to invest money. I buy a knife because I like it and enjoy it. That to me is my return on my investment.

I believe I read that Buck and Strider are ending their relationship. This could cause these knives to increase in value but I doubt alot. Buck and Striders collaboration worked like most others I would guess. Buck made factory editions of Strider designs at a more affordable price with both Buck and Strider profiting.

Buck does a good job with 420 HC. They've used it for a long time and have an excellent person doing their heat treat Paul Bos. I would say that Bucks 420HC compares favorably with Gerbers 12c27.

Check out knifetests.com for a torture test of a Buck Nighthawk (same steel) and of a Gerber LMF II.

I don't have one of these knives but they look good and I'm sure you will enjoy owning it. Good Luck.

I'm going to guess that it is the Strider Buck 890.

Not a bad knife, but certainly not a safe queen. The price you got is a fair price and yes the item has been discontinued as the Strider-Buck collaboration has also ceased.

People get a bit hot and bothered about 420HC...because it says 420...but as mentioned, Buck(or rather Paul Bos) does a great job on treating and the steel is tough and viable for its purpose which being easy to sharpen without the need of special diamond stones and etc.

Although...since it was already mentioned above, the Nighthawk is incredible value and often goes for half the price of the Strider Buck 890 for similar size...but with rubberized grip instead of G10 and full tang.

On good Advise i moved this question over to the BUCK Forum. Thanks to those who have replied. Sorry for the double post
