I received an email from Burt today, showing my latest order, a kitchen knife.

I think it turned out fantastic, but then I'm the proud Pappa. It is a core of 52100 with 416 stainless laminated over. The knife is integral with a hidden tang which is nice for a kitchen knife. The handle is amboyna with heartwood and sapwood. Blade should be maybe 6.5" and is flat ground for a nice thin profile.

This one custom that I plan to use daily for all kinds of kitchen chores. The laminated blade is more friendly to a damp environment, but with the benefit of the carbon steel core.

Enjoy. I can comment further when in-hand.

Gorgeous is the word. Man it looks really good and that laminated blade just makes you go WOW. Let us know how it feels in the hand and how it cuts!

:eek::eek: There was an incredible kitchen knife posted recently that I thought was about the nicest i'd seen...BUT this one tops it!

Congratulations and thanks for showing it.

Just so we're all on the same page, what you see on this blade isn't really a hamon which is an area of differential hardening. What you are seeing here is the interface of the stainless steel and the carbon steel. The darker areas in the stainless are the result of carbon migration from the higher carbon 52100 to the lower carbon stainless. It makes for a great visual effect and the lamination serves a most practical function.

Burt can jump in if this description isn't accurate.

Beautiful.
Excellent design for intended purpose.
What a pleasure it will be to use in the kitchen.

Gee whiz! That is really nice and a nice photo as well. I'm jealous, Barty.

Fantastic knife!

If I had that knife I would cook for my family a lot more often!:D:thumbup: (so I could use the knife)

Congratulations on a gorgeous knife!

Burt Foster's ability to tackle such an atypical project (for Burt Foster) with the finesse, beauty, and creativity obvious with this knife show how truly talented he is. It seems like many talented makers tend to stick to "variations on a theme" without ever really going outside the box.

And yes, that hamon is killer for sure. But there are lots of incredible things going on with that knife that just bring it all together!

Thanks for posting pics.

Beautiful knife! I like Burt's integral approach anyway, but this one is really something...

Proud poppa....the blade is certainly beautiful....the integral construction and faceted handle will serve you well, both functionally and aesthetically.

FOR ME, aesthetically, the heartwood/sapwood is usually a no-go, but in this case, it seems to work.

Functionally AND aesthetically, I don't care for the offset handle angle....if it works for you:thumbup:

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson
