Is someone making knives again under the Camillus name? I just got off ebay and I saw a lot of Camillus knives being advertised as "new."

The Camillus brand being made for, and imported by, Acme United Corp.

I had a dialog going with a couple of people at AUC, and they were going to send me samples that I could try out, and send to forum members here to try out.

I never received the samples, or heard anything back from them, which was very disappointing. I just emailed them again, we'll see what response I get here.

thx - cpr

Taiwan & China is all I see.

Yeah - same here. The last dialog I had with anyone from AUC (Tom Johnson & Rick Constantine) was last July, and Tom Johnson told me that they had products coming in from Asia first, then Japan & U.S. later. They were really talking up their efforts to keep the quality as close as possible to the old U.S. made products, but so far I haven't been too impressed. They had promised to send me samples of a bunch of their line, and I told them I'd pass them around here and let some of the BF folks work them out. But, after July, I never heard another word from them. :grumpy: I emailed recently, but I still haven't heard back from anyone at AUC about the things we talked about last year. (I worked in Customer Service for 7+ years, and you simply don't make promises and & then forget them. Tends to, well, alienate yer customers, ya know?)

I do find it a little crass to use all the pics of American Cutlery workers though.....

I agree - but from a marketing standpoint, I understand why. Keep the familiarity that everyone in your old customer base is used to. Of course, that's what Taylor Brands is doing with the Schrade OT & UH brands too. :barf:

I won't be spending any of my money on AUC's Camillus line. I've got enough good ol' American-made Camillus to keep me & my Scouts supplied for a while.

I note they also show the factory in Camillus "where Camillus knives are/were made".

Is Acme even a cutlery manufacturer at all? I know I went around the mulberry bush with the sales rep/PR guy from Taylor brands when they began claiming that Stewart Taylor was the new "President of Schrade", and that TBLLC was a manufacturer, not an importer/wholesaler. The closest I got was that an assembly cell had been set up in their warehouse to put together some knives that weren't legal to import?

A fat kid in his mother's basement with an internet connection is as much of a "Manufacturer" as Acme or Taylor. :jerkit:

IMHO, of course! :D

I don't think so. As I understand it, they do make scissors here, but that's it.

thx - cpr

Actually no.
They do BUY some scissors from the old Clauss factory in SW Arkansas (for now), but they did NOT buy the factory when they bought the trademarks.

Basically the same strategy they used at the Camillus auction:
Buy the names & intellectual properties.
Talk about restarting American Manufacturing.
Buy Chinese knives with recognized American brand names on them.
Hope we are too stupid to notice!
As usual, IMHO!:p

 :grumpy: I'll look back at my notes, but I'm almost certain they told me that they (UAC) had a small crew of employees actually making scissors here in the states.

Consider it in the Public Domain now! :p

Aw, Phil, you're slipping. You could have made him send you a nickel every time he used that. You could have been rich! Well, maybe . . . :p

I just hope that no more of our Cutlery's end up this way!

Amen. I've got a box of U.S. Schrades, and a box of Camillus too. I buy them when I find them, just to have the 'real' ones for my collection, or to give to others who'll appreciate them.

Sounds like politician speak to me! :thumbdn:

"had a small crew of employees actually making scissors here in the states"
True to a point; just NOT their employees!

Please share what your notes say on this, as of course, I could be wrong!
Then again, as the owner of the factory in question invited me down to review the operation.............

I don't think you're wrong. My notes do say that one of the two guys I spoke to told me specifically that they had a small operation here with a crew making scissors, for school & office use.

When they mentioned sourcing their new Camillus products out of Japan & the states here, I had hoped we would see Camillus return as a decent quality product, not like what the Taylors did to Schrade. I was thinking more along the lines of the Spydercos from Japan, and maybe Canal Street or the like producing some of the slipjoint models. Maybe I read too much into what they were saying, but my notes were pretty clear.
