My pal RangerJoe and I took my new canoe for its maiden voyage today. The canoe is a 15' Kevlar canoe (50 lbs) from HolyCow Canoe Company that I picked up yesterday on my way back from Toronto.

We dropped the boat in the River Canard which has huge swaths of American Lotus growing along its shorelines and into the main channel. The roots and seeds are edible and it would be especially easy to gather the seed pods into the canoe for harvesting. We have to wait until the seeds are more mature for any bulk gathering though. As to the roots, probably be a bit messy but certainly doable if you are willing to wade into the water.

We paddled about 1.5 h and the canoe felt great. I will try to gather some of the mature seeds later this year and prepare them according to Samuel Thayer's instructions for tasting.

Here is the short (2.4 min) video of our little test run...

nice canoe, looks like the more straight sided kind I like versus the more rounded tumblehome design, better tracking and speed

Nice video Ken, and cool new canoe. I've seen seed heads like those on plants down this way but thinking it wasn't lotus.

So... did you and Joe get together and eat those Lotus seeds yet?.... hubba hubba.... lol.

Great vid. I'm just about to epoxy some bumpers to my kevlar canoe. Too many rocks around here
