Hi everyone, hopefully I'm doing this right but I've attached photos of my case medium stockman I received last night and had two concerns. Reading up on the pattern I was aware rubbing was an issue but the sheepsfoot moves over far enough when the clip point is open that it sometimes stops just shy of closing, is this normal? Also, the pen blades nail nick is substantially smaller than the other two and I'm finding it difficult to open as I let it slip a few times when pulling it out, is this also as intended?

I also received a mini trapper to decide between the two that aside from a blemish on the clip point seems very solid in comparison.

Thanks in advance for any information.

The clip not closing isn't "normal".
I'd contact Case about sending it in for warrantee repair. Maybe the Sheepsfoot was crinked too far and the Spey/Budding blade wasn't crinked at all?
From the picture the Spey Budding blade doesn't look like it was crinked.

I don't know why Case alleges blade rub is "normal" for the pattern. Lazyness, perhaps?
My several much less expensive Rough Ryder, Marbles, and Boker Plus two spring no center liner stockmen don't have blade or liner rub.

I appreciate the thoughtful reply, the knife is still in the return window so I'll go ahead and send this back.

I grew up on Case and Buck so it's all I really knew when it comes to the more traditional stuff. Trying to move back towards it has been a bit of a challenge with them so I'll check out the companies you mentioned, thanks!

The Buck 301/371/303/373 are three spring No blade crinking or blade rub.
The 371 and 373 are lower cost imports.
Good luck, and welcome back to tradionals. :)

Blade rub is normal, that much is not. When I briefly owned the same knife model (63032, chestnut CV), I had issue with the fact that the pen blade would catch the nail nick of the sheepsfoot; it wasn't impossible to open, but I didn't like that it happened every time. I returned it, and I've stuck with 70's and older 6332 models, which I find far superior (they also have half-stops).

Looks like chestnut jigged bone to me. I would send it in if the blade does not close. The newest one I have is a 2020 6318 Crimson Peach seed, it does have some rub, but all blades snap shut under their own power. I like it and carry it several times a week. It has freed up a bit since it was new, I think it may have had some polishing compound in the joints out of the box:

I really like Case's chestnut jigged bone CV knives in general; I currently have 8 different patterns from that series. FWIW, I got a medium stockman just like yours and I'm very disappointed with the blade rub it exhibits. I kept the knife despite the blade rub, but I almost never carry it because of that problem. (And I'm not a big fan of square bolsters, either.)

The large stockman I had tried before had that same issue with the nail nicks. I'll add those digits to my list and hunt an older pattern if they're not too expensive, thanks.

3/3 of my case stockman pattern knives have blade rub. It’s annoying but I consider it an unstoppable part of knives that use the krinking method to fit the blades. The main blade getting hung up however... eeesh. I, like you, grew up on case... but I’ve had such bad luck getting a good Case in these recent years that I’ve all but given it up...

Regret to hear of your experiences, normal no and unacceptable too. I think you will be pleased by the replacement, it's one of my favourite CASE Medium Stockman patterns as it has a Pen blade. I have a Chestnut cv and an Amber Bone one and there was slight rub but brisk W&T and loud snap-as it should be. These are very much used knives by me and prized so I hope your experience will be similar. Note too, I'm European so buying from a shop in person is impossible but I've had largely very good to excellent experience with CASE knives, very satisfying carry.

Thanks, Will
