Just joined Bladeforums as the knife thing is getting to be a hobby. Already have a Benchmade Mini-Griptilian, Spyderco Manbug, Dragonfly and Native, a small SOG and of course a SAK. After reading all about traditional knives (which I haven't owned since my boy scout knife when I was a kid), I decided to stick a toe in and got a Case Small Texas Jack knife in the CV steel. I've been using it over the past week to open packages, cut oranges and apples at work, and love the almost case colored patina that is developing on the large blade. I've used the smaller blade only a few times, and it's not taking on any patina, almost like it's SS (although it does have CV stamped in the tang). Maybe just need to cut some more fruit with it as there's no acid in cardboard!

Now I begun looking at Great Eastern Cutler, Queen, etc. Here we go....

Great site by the way!

Welcome! We're happy to have new folks. I'm a relative newcomer myself to the hobby and there is just so much good information and so many friendly and knowledgeable people here. I think you'll enjoy it here.

I've got a couple of the Case Small Texas Jacks myself. It's a great knife, truly a classic pattern that's just about the right size for casual carry and daily use.

Here's a pic of one of mine with a bit of patina on the main blade at the time this was taken.

Yeah, I've been looking at the GEC stuff too... The pics that the forum members post are incredible. I know it's just a matter of time before I start getting some.

There's a great video on utube where they take you through the plant and show the various processes - really nice.

Have fun,

Cheers, Ed

I have a Texas jack that will serve as my travel knife this week. I love it and take it on trips when I must travel by plane.

How to develop a patina on your Texas Jack:

Step 1: Assemble supplies

Step 2: Apply materials to blade

Step 3: Enjoy a healthy breakfast

:D

Now that's a carbon steel loving breakfast! Oh, almost forgot, also have an ESEE 3 (1095 Carbon) I bought over the summer for hiking, and a Leatherman MUT in my shooting bag.

A Case Texas Jack is a great introduction to traditional patterned pocket knives. Welcome aboard!

I like my small texas jack but the 6292 is almost the perfectly sized jack for me. Too bad they are so hard to find at a reasonable price.

Welcome aboard  The Case Texas Jack is a great pattern I think :)

Great breakfast pics Jon, you've made me hungry! :D

The hardest part was carving those little "o's" out of the flat slab of oat planking. :D
