So I got my 2003 Consumer Catalogs today, thanks to Joyce. Insanely fast.

There is a LOT of cool stuff in here. The SS Cricket (fixes EVERY problem I had with the Cricket), the Chinook II (fixes EVERY problem I had with the Chinook, and a couple I didn't even think of), the coated Perrin and Temperance (I hope this is for real and not just a goofy advertisement), and even the Spydersaw. It all looks pretty awesome, and there's the usual good stuff and some other new things too.

But I'm really, REALLY Jazzed about the Dodo. It's everything I like in a knife. Short S30V blade, big (not black) g-10 handle, contours look just right, inobtrusive carry, and a new lock to check out. I think this is The Knife, the one I've wished existed that just doesn't. If they're not HUGELY priced, I'm going to need a pair of them.

I'm having trouble with the search, so I was wondering if one of you folks who keep up on these things could tell me -- do we have a (projected) MSRP, and an approximate release date?

A bit perturbed at how light his wallet is going to be,

The new Spydie Dodo IS way cool, but I also like Spyderco's stab at the Cold Steel Vaquero with the introduction of the new SpyderSaw...LOL!!.:D.

I haven't received my catalog yet :(;

But from what I have heard, the Dodo is the Sals'a big Brother. If so, I would get one sight unseen - I have the Ti Salsa, and it is the coolest knife I have in that size range.

Hmmmm..... I think my Salsa might be the only knife I have it that size range, but hey, its still way cool. And a darned good knife too ;)

The Dodo is a short, squat folder with a reverse "S" blade config. 3mm thick (.125) S30V. The ergonomic handle is blue G-10. The model uses the new Ball bearing lock. Made in the Golden facility and scheduled for Spring delivery. The model was designed and engineered by Eric Glesser. Left / right wire clip for tip up carry. The design is somewhat radical compared with 3 bladed stockmans. The design was created with an bend to a small MBC folder (legal anywhere). Carries easily due to it's thin format.

Maybe Carlos or one of the dealers can pull a pic from the catalog.

UNREAL!!!!! I LOVE a short blade/long handle format......this may have to replace my Ayoob as my favorite Spydie........

Why are all of Syderco's designs so old-fashioned? :D

My only concern with the blade shape is how hard it will be to maintane a good point during resharpening. I've never tried to resharpen a short reverse curve blade.

Payback> C80P... price to be determined(as of my list)

John> I have no recurve tip on my Tufram cricket... did it about 3-4months of using it.

This has to be my favorite design by Spyderco in many years. Like Recluse, I love the short blade, coupled with a long, ergonomic handle. I'll probably buy some for my friends that live "in the city", should make a nice, legal, defensive blade and pizza cutter!

So Sal or anyone in the know, is the Ball Lock MBC rated? I can see how it would be very strong, but how does it really rate? Inquiring minds want to know!

Thanks.

Very interesting blade, although I do not like the looks of the clip at all. I'm not too familiar with the ball bearing lock, looks very unusual.

How long is the blade?

Is it gold TI coated or is that just the tint of the photo? I like it, the big handle / short blade gunting style. Is it lined, and is the pokey little tail strong enough for use as an MBC impact tool?

I like this one a lot, hopefully it will be out soon.

I noticed the lock slide is always in the same position, both when the blade is open and when it is closed. Does this mean the lock has to be released manually for opening?

Sal,
I did remember Eric telling me about it's MBC bias in design at SOS show, I was very impressed with his enthusiasm.
This piece would look very slick/almost sophisticated if it had black scales. So I have to know, will a future batch possibly have low-key black handles? the blue was 'very' bright as I remembered it.

Grey Area,
The Ballbearing lock operates much like the Axis, but with a ball instead of a bar. The ball moves back as you begin to open the blade.

Zardoz,
The functional beauty of this model (and all ball bearing lock models)is that it doesn't need liners, so it remains very thin, fast, and light.

take care,
Ken

Ken,

thank you for explaining. Unbelievably I have never handled an Axis lock, but the way you describe the ball bearing lock sounds like the way I want it to be . :)

Just when I told my wife I wouldn't be buying any more knives, this Dodo thing comes along. But enough about that... What is the specs on the new Chinook?????

Thanks!

Sincerely,
Anthony

I hope for a batch with black handles as well. The blue is about the only thing I don't like about this knife so far. Since I haven't worn anything brighter than brown since the mid-80's, the blue is really going to stand out in my pocket............ ;)

That won't stop me from buying one though. :) And a trainer would be nice too. :D

And......I think I need to take custody of the prototype, to hold me over until the regular ones are released. :p
