Well, I just browsed trough SOG's 2008 catalog, some interesting pieces there! And when I saw Tigershark Elite with removable handguard, it reminded me of an idea I've been pursuing for a while.
It started like this: I was handling SOG Vulcan, cool knife! Flipper, blade shape, great! BUT .... But that bayonet clip. I am really used to regular end-of-handle-sticks-from-pocket type of clip. Well, nevermind, there are people who like it. Then I got my spec elite, I have already expressed my opinions on this knife here - in short it's great. BUT ... It doesn't have flipper, and even though wrist flicking is easy, I miss that flipper. Then again, there are people who prefer no flipper.
So, I was thinking (yes, it hurts a lot when I do that). Why not make knife, that can be customized by customer to fit his/her needs? I'm talking about a knife, that has handle scales predrilled with holes for regular clip, as well as room for bayonet clip and comes with both clips. Knife, that has removable flipper - I don't know whether it's even possible from engineering point of view, but come on, guys at SOG are pretty clever, simple "screw-in-place" kind of flipper and I'm satisfied! Knife, that comes with standard thumbstuds as well as some kind of longer "wave" thumbstuds - reason? When I pull my SpecElite out of pocket, I am sometimes able to hook up one thumb stud to the edge of my pocket and use it to open the knife, similar to using a emerson wave feature (which I like on my Spyderco Endura for instance). Should the knife had a special, larger thumb stud, it would make this kind of opening much simpler. Or, fit the knife with removable wave hook!
I understand that it probably isn't easy to design such versatile knife. I understand that including all those features in one knife would increase the end price (because of price of patents/research&development) and that the customer may feel he/she is paying for things he/she won't use, therefor not buying the knife. Ok. But the way I perceive SOG as a company, this type of design could IMHO fit into SOG's offerings and targeted market segments.
It's just an idea, so take it easy everyone, don't call me names just because I want a perfect knife
We all do, right?
Oh, and a couple of different questions, maybe for SOG representatives - I've been eyeballing that new Arcitech with carbon fiber scales. Looks awesome. When it's said on SOG webpage "very limited production", what does it mean? Hundreds, thousands of knives? Are blades stamped with numbers or dates indicating when it was produced? Are those Arcitechs "more handmade" than regular knives?
Thanks for reading,
best regards
Pavel
