Some of the changes are OK, but the rest are just pure BS and un-democratic. The ones that are pure BS are nanny state material and conflicts the rights of the people.

The changes include...

  • Knife sales to people under 16 prohibited
  • New stop and search powers for police (Police will be equipt with metal detectors and can search anyone who they "suspect" carrying a knife)
  • Knives that are advertised to be "Ready for Combat" and are not a prohibited weapon is prohibited
  • Providing knives knowing, or should have known (WTF?) that the person will use to commit a crime will attract a $20,000 fine.

Here is the bill concerning the new knife laws:

And here is a discussion paper related to the bill (The deadline for comments is pretty much today (1/10/09):

You have my sympathy. We have people with the same type of mentality here in the States but thankfully we aren't as far down that road as Australia or many other nations.

We also have Constitutional rights against unlawful search and seizure of private property. Australians, unfortunately, don't have this important protection.

since Australia is so close to Indonesia and Australians vacation there, would anyone happen to know the knife laws of Indonesia, or at least somewhere online where I can find the laws (in English)?
