Ever since I lost my Peanut a few months back, I was forced to try out different patterns. I tried the Sodbuster Jr, and while it's a great knife, it wasn't for me. I need more of a point then the soddie had, and I also wanted something a little more sheeple friendly. The big blade, even on the soddie jr., raises a few eyebrows. Plus it's a little uncomfortable for me to carry in my pocket. I HATE anything in my pocket, and I could definitely feel the soddie jr. I tried a cellidor handled SAK, the Recruit, and that one didn't carry right for my tastes either. Medium trapper? Too bulky. Nothing was really working. Then I tried my old SAK Standard Issue, and fell in love with the thin frame. It rode very nicely in my pocket. Hardly noticed it was there. Being a SAK, it was pretty gosh darn sheeple friendly as well. It actually took me a while to get used to it, being used to carrying a much smaller knife, but I carried it for most of the time I was separated from my Peanut. Well, a few weeks back I found it. It had fallen out of my wife's purse and into her friend's car, where it stayed for months until it came home to me. Needless to say, ALL the other knives went back into the drawer, and the Peanut returned to it's rightful place in my pocket. However, a strange thing has happened. I miss my SAK!!! I got used to the size of the handle in my hand. I was slicing cheese with the Peanut a few days ago, and the small handle, which doesn't even fill out MY small hands (and trust me, I have some SMALL hands), felt very uncomfortable, like I didn't quite have control of the knife. I like the small blades, but overall I think the Peanut may be too small for me to grip. I have since put the Peanut away, and am now EDCing the SAK Standard Issue, and loving it. It's durable, tough, can take a beating, and looks good the whole time. Plus with all the talk lately of the Scout Knife, this pattern feels just right. Does anyone else carry an SI, or it's cousin, the Soldier? How does it compare to old-school Scout knives? Jackknife, any SAK stories? ;)

I've carried some variant of the Scout for years, including my present pocket companion- a 1992 Soldier. Carries excellently, and takes a screaming edge when convexed.

interesting....
I have all sorts of knives and I find that equal end knives
or similar patterns
aka SAKs, Scout patterns, Moose, large Rail Splitters etc.
Have the best feel for use.
I did a comparison test of heavy cutting tasks between
my SAK soldier, a Spyderco Delica, and a BM Mini-Griptillian and
the SAK was the only one that didn't hurt my hand after long use.

On the flip side a 3' 1/4" Queen stockman is too narrow.
You can't get the leverage needed for heavy cutting.

I have found that handle shape is as important as the blade steel.
If you can't continue cutting because the handle digs into your hand
or you can't get the leverage ... who cares about edge retention.

I have been a fan of the sak's for many years. Even though I will carry one of my traditionals in my right pants pocket, I have a nylon belt pouch with a velcro closed flap that goes just behind my right hip. Its wide enough to hold a two layer sak and a small flashlight side by side. My usual combo is a Victorinox tinker with a Dorcy single AAA LED from the 'mart. Of late, the Dorcy is been phased out for a Peal Solutions Kino Bay on trial. I like to have some tools and a light, in case of an emergency. Sometimes the tinker will be replaced by a Camillus scout knife with a carbon blade, and sometimes in a fit of extreme nostalgia, a Kamp King will go in the pouch. Just for the hell of it. The old Kamp King with its thin carbon blade takes a wicked edge.

Alot of the time my traditional carry is one of my old departed family or friends knives, so the sak does duty for the dirty or rough jobs I don't want to use grandads old Hen and Rooster or Pauls Case stockman on. I can replace the sak at the next Target or outdoors store I come to. It's an "expendible" tool.

I carry a SAK, Case Canoe and Lg Trapper. The SAK gets the beater jobs, but it is one my dad brought me from Switzerland a number of years back.
