Slayer had a good idea over on the Spyderco web site forum's about a clip design which would allow for a deeper carry option.

This would only work for the 98 version style clips. I like the idea myself, what do you think?

Cool,

Though allowance has to be made for the operation of attaching the clip and such.

A whole would have to be introduced to allow a coin to get to the head of the chicago screw on the clip side. That hole would make the clip very wide.

no need for a coin just take a thin strip of metal and bend it into a L shapeso the short end will fit under the clip and into the slots

Out of curiosity, does EDI have patents on their deep-pocket clip? If so, isn't the clip in that picture essentially EDI's deep pocket clip? It's fastened differently, but I imagine it'd violate the patent if EDI has one.

If not, I love it too

Joe

MDP, What I was thinking is make the clip a one piece design, just hold the clip as you tighten the screw. No need to have a hole or slot in this way. The clip would be the same width as what is used now.

Joe, I thought of that too...I guess if you can patent a hole you can sure get one for a deep carry clip.

Don't throw any parties yet, but a quick boolean search of the U.S. PTO's website revealed no design or patent apps filed (in the U.S.) by EDI for a clip. Of course, more extensive research into previous art is necessary to know for sure, but that's what patent attornies get paid to do

If you guys want the patent rights, I suggest that you move quickly and find a local patent attorney.

Dave.

The deep pocket clip patent issue has discussed before, and if memory serves me...

EDI wanted to get a patent but they were unable to because they discovered prior art in the handmade market.

I do not believe there are any patents on the "deep pocket" clip.

the first Clipit design (1980) had a deep pocket clip that was made by leaving the clip material exending out of the scale. Then folding over the extended material into a clip.

We found that there were problems with the bend creating sharp edged (scratched furniture, etc. In addition, the "deep pocket" was more difficult to access quickly.

I imagine it could be done easily enough. the question is really whether there are enougn people requiring a "deep pocket" carry?

Sal, I want a deep carry Merlin and Endura.

Kdarmy: nice drawing, that is exactly the configuration I had in mind.

Sal: I would find the deep carry clip a useful option. How many would have to be interested for something like this to be available? Thanks for the forum!

Deep carry is my middle name

I want a deep carry option for any folder I have - makes it usable for both outdoor activities (high ride) and low-key urban use (low ride)

Sal, I want deep pocket carry - scratched furniture be darned! Maybe you could offer two clips or sell DP clips as an ELU installed aftersale part.

I've got a bunch of your knives and carry them regularly, especially the Wegner, Jr.

But why does such a small knive have so much of it up out of the pocket?

Good question Nimrod.

As to the clip, why not manufacture one with an allen key shape hole? The various male/ female fittings to secure chainrings to the crankarms of a bicycle is a perfect example. They are of a 5 mm size and come in steel, Al (different colors!) and Ti. Hmmm??

Slayer - Welcome to the Spyderco forum. It's not a matter of how many. Tooling is expensive for a clip, + inventory costs, etc. If dealers won't stock them (not likely), then all sales would have to be ELU direct.

It's possible to make an accessory, but may not be practical. No commitments at this time.
