I got my clip for my new pacific salt pretty bent up and wanted a new one. I called Spyderco and they won't send a new one for free. I was surprised. Benchmade will always send you one for free. Oh well, I learn something everyday.:(

I don´t see why Spyderco should replace a clip for free, If BM "does it" it´s great but... Well it´s my personal view and I´m really sorry for your clip.

Was the damage to the clip caused by a defect in material or workmanship? If not, why on earth would you expect them to replace it at their expense?

Customer satisfaction, Why does Benchmade send one for no charge. I believe this knife retails for almost 100.00. All plastic except for the blade and spring, pins, and clip.

Aren't the clips for H1 knives made of Titanium and therefore not cheap?

If they started handing out free Ti, it'd be a huge cost when everybody realizes they can swap their regular steel clips for Ti

It's PlainEdge or SpyderEdge and is similar in shape and size to Spyderco's best-selling Endura model but with a slightly more rounded tip. All internal steel parts are treated as well making them impervious to rust and pitting and of course, salt. Those challenged by cleaning and maintaining their knives will find the Pacific Salt stays rust-free even if put away wet. The blade's hole is enlarged to 14mm for easier opening/closing with gloved, wet or cold hands. Textured in a checkerboard pattern, the black FRN handle has a grippy texture and is fitted with a reversible titanium pocket clip which positions for right-handers and lefties. The addition of a lanyard hole offers a backup method of attachment (thong or lanyard cord) for use around water where once dropped, a knife is often lost or elusively hard to retrieve.

Then I do apologize. I just know the metal was very soft. It may very well be Ti. I like lockback knives and Spyderco makes many so I have very recently been buying several. In the past I have owned many Benchmade's and they have always sent me a clip at no charge. I was was just suprised that they would charge you for them.

They are Ti clips, and very well made. I wouldn't expect them to be cheap.

CRK charges $15 or so for a clip, which is the same Spyderco charges for a new clip.

Why would it be covered under warranty? Was there something defective about it?

I'm sorry that you are disappointed in our policy. I checked with our crew in SFO and the charge for this clip would be $13.90 (includes shipping).

I can't speak to what other manufacturers do. Spyderco is a relatively small business with a crew of just 43 people. You are comparing us to a company at least 2-3 times our size.

Clips are not free to us, nor are they free to other manufacturers. The cost of replacement clips has to be covered somewhere. It is either calculated in the original pricing of a knife or there is a subsequent charge when and if a replacement clip is needed. We know that we cannot give away clips, but we would prefer to only charge you for one when and if there is an issue.

OK folks, I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers here. I have been carrying Benchmades for many years and know that they have always sent me free clips when I need one. I have just here lately been buying Spyderco's and you do have an excellent product. I didn't realize you were such a small company. So, again, I apoligize.

Wow, I am currently filling a cookie-tin with clips because they are removed immediately. Guess they should be tagged for future sale or horsetrading.

I hate pocket clips.

Hey you got a horse to trade for one.

;):);)

I can do some horse trading. Shoot me an email. You have yours turned off for this forum.

I haven't had a problem with any Spyderco clips so far, save for one that failed on a Centofante III. I've had a few clip failures on Emersons, and those are about fifteen bucks each.

I did have a Benchmade AFCK fall off the top of a C-130 and suffer a little damage, including to the clip. Benchmade sent me a small kit with clip, screws, and even a replacement logo. That was nice.

I wouldn't expect any manufacturer to replace the clip. Once I get a knife, unless it's something catastrophic, I figure it's mine to fix, modify, repair, or what have you.

Some of the spyderco knives are impressive enough to me that I've bought a handfull...the military is one such knife, and I can't say I'm any less impressed with the paramilitary. If a clip fails and the company doesn't want to replace it...well, I'll buy another. It's just not that big a deal.

Its not Ti.

The reason I didn't think the clip was Ti was because it really sticks to a magnet. I didn't think Ti was magnetic. Am I wrong?

Titanium alone won't stick to a magnet (it is paramagnetic), but if it touches any steel (screws, liners, ?), it will stick. I guess it's because of the grade of titanium used in most knife applications, which contains aluminum and vanadium in small quantities.

The first Salt series knives did not have Ti clips. They changed about 1.5 years into production.

My salt must be one of the earlier ones then because as you can see from the pictures, it really sticks to a magnet. I got the clip pretty well straightened out.

Could be 304 SS.

It is an early one, you can also tell by the jimping style on the blade.
