New coating is tough!

I know I've been known to give "an opinion" now and then (who? me?) but this is a good one -- really!

I got around to blasting one of the new Tweeners (BK15) today in the sandblast cabinet (but not sand) and I was shocked at the resiliency of the new coating. I didn't have a watch on it, but I swear it took 7X to 8X longer to get this wrinkle finish off of the blade than the regular old black powdercoat, or whatever the stuff was. This new stuff should wear like iron.

I didn't believe it at first. I cranked up the air pressure, then changed out the blast media for some brand new sharp stuff and nothing changed! It would eventually wear through, but this is without a doubt the toughest stuff I've ever blasted.

Maybe you guys doing the chemical stripping might want to re-think that move. Just sayin'...

I may end up DuraCoating right over the factory finish.

I plan on leaving the coating on my 16 when I get it (and I really really want a 14 with the new coating).

I too have realized that the coating is insanely tough. I have stropped my bk16 for a couple hours total along the edge to convex the edge and the coating hasn't been stropped off yet. It is just a little shiny along the edge. The old powder coat pretty much falls off.

the new coating is interesting. thicker, and smoother (less surface area), and as a result, some of the new knives WILL NOT STICK to my butcher rack; almost all my knives start out doing kitchen duty.

the old smooth paint? sticks like glue. the new stuff? not so much. that may change as they wear smoother.

fractal surface area. the rough nearly stippled surface is pocketed with micro dimples/pores/pits. this holds ... stuff. like grease. i REALLY had to work at getting my knife clean. again, this will lessen with use as the surface becomes more flat.

could be an issue for some - like with butchering in the fields/etc.

dishwasher for the win :)

I plain to just try one wear it off my 16 so far I just smoothed it out a little.

I noticed this when my BK16 got batoned through a couple racks of improperly cut back ribs. The grease was really ground in there, had to really scrub to get it all off. Not sure about the new coating...Love the look of it, seems to be more durable...but from a practical standpoint, it seems like it's gonna give you more friction and resistance.
