Someone told me that Cold Steel is supposed to start making Carbon V again. Anybody know if this is true? I really hope so. I only have one Carbon V "The SRK" but its awesome.

Camillus was their last supplier of that steel , and now that they are using 0-1 I cant see them bringing back carbon v unless they have a new source for that steel...

KaBar 1095CV is close, but I doubt they are going to start making CS knives.

According to the guy that told me this that's exactly what it is. Supposedly they found someone else to get it from. Idk. The guy said he read an article about it somewhere. It may be complete BS but I sure would like to see it happen.

More like identical. My understanding is that when the supply of Sharon 170-06 aka the original Carbon V aka 1095 CroVan aka 52-100B dried up, CS switched to something elseandmay have switched a couple of times over the years. Someone is making that steel for Cutco/Kabar/Becker. The question is who and is it an "ongoing custom smelt" deal?

and a LOT more expensive. A lot of knife makers say that steel is only a small percentage of your cost. The caveat is "until you start using exotic PM steels." ;) At Aldo retail prices, a piece of 1095 big enough to make say a Kabar USMC knife will cost you like $6. For 3V, its like $21.
Now that they are using 3V in their knives this may be a mute point. Carbon V was 50100B (which Becker still uses), and while it is very good stuff, 3V is better. It is tougher and holds an edge longer.

Here is a comparison of 50100B, O1, and 3V:

Hey guys I just talked to a fellow collector and good friend and he said that CS IS already making carbon V knives again. He said he has a brand new catalog he can show me. I'll let y'all know what I find out but this friend of mine is a very reliable source.

If they do bring it back, it will sink everyone on ebay selling carbon v knives at insane prices.and everyone who paid those prices will faint. that would be great !

Well CarbonV is a CS trade mark so they can put the stamp on whatever they want. Doesn't mean it is the same as it was.would like to know who is making their knives.

I don't follow CS much but I did pick up a brand new Carbon V SRK and another bnib fixie a couple months ago in a 2 knife deal for less than $100.
Always good to hear I fell into a great deal for a change.
I am impressed with the quality though.

^that's not bad. I found a guy on craigslist selling a bunch of knives, wound up with a carbon v trailmaster and master tanto among others, after selling the others the trailmaster was free . cant beat that..

LOL That's funny [emoji3] Yeah people act like they are made of gold! I've had several people over the years try to buy my Carbon V SRK. Been offered some pretty good money for it too. But my wife actually bought that for me many years ago on our honeymoon. We honeymooned in Pigeon Forge Tennessee And we went to Smokey Mountain Knife Works. [emoji4]

That's a good point. Hadn't really thought about that.

Paul Tsujimoto (Tooj), formerly of KaBar, posted that Kabar has the original Sharon 0170-6 alloy custom made for them. They know the original composition, and order up a heat from a steel manufacturer. This is possible if you buy a large enough quantity of steel.

Here is the correct time line:

1) Cold Steel Carbon V was first produced in the Alcas Factory (Cutco and KA-BAR) Mid 1980s, Carbon V was originally 1095CV/0170-06/50100B.
2) Cold Steel moved to Ontario early 1990s. Carbon V started out as 1095CV/0170-06/50100B but while at Ontario, Dan Maragni removed the small amount of nickel from the formula.
3) Cold Steel moved to Camillus approx. 1995. Carbon V stayed 0170-06 minus the nickel.
How do I know all of this?...I worked at all 3 factories.

I would love a carbon v master hunter , I've been searching for a while now
:D :D :D

I doubt that anything new will be made in the USA...
Interesting. I had no idea Carbon V went back that far.
Oh yeah :)
