New Commander Owner Questions (or) Could someone direct me to the FAQ)

I just picked up a used Commander and I have a few questions.

Is there a procedure for making the action less stiff? Right now its just a little tight.

How many pairs of pants will I ruin the pocket of before I get this wave thing down?

Where do you put your last three fingers so they are out of the way when Waving open?

Do these Commanders come with bandaids when you get one from the factory?

Where is the serial number located?

Back to the finger thing. Has anyone ever shifted the clip over to the spine edge of the side plate to get more room for fingers?

Thanks

Ok, I can just about manage to answer a couple of these... ;)

Try adjusting the pivot screw to loosen the blade up... that may work. If not, take the knife apart and give it a good clean, and maybe adjust the tension on the ball bearing indent on the opposite side to the liner lock. I'm sure someone else can point you to a better explination of how to do this if you require it.

You shouldn't wear out any pairs of pants learning the WAVE opening. It's actually pretty easy to master. You will where some some out eventually though... haha!

I tend to grab the pocket clip with my "spare" fingers, but I don't think theres a definate right or wrong way.. if it works for you then it's right.

Emerson knives are pretty much the only knives I've not cut myself with (argh, famous last words!), so I don't think you'll be needing any bandaids! ;)

The serial number (if your knife has one) will be on the blade, just under the thumbdisk...

I doubt you'll find anyone who has moved the clip, but you never know. As I said, try placing your spare fingers on the clip - it works for me! :D

Wolfenite: First let me extend a welcome to the EKI Forum (hope you have a thick skin). ;)

GIB basically hit it on the head. Your best investment in your new Commander is to take it apart and get to know the knife. I'm sure a good cleaning with some WD-40 will relieve any lag spots. Then give the whole thing a rub down with some Tuff Cloth. I've been using a mixture of 'Molly' and break-free on the pivot pin. The combination has been excellent for me and the knife is smoooth!

As for the 'waving' action, I've now move to a new strong side (RH Front pocket) method. Try placing your thumb and index finger inside the pocket placing the index finger along the spine. This will allow you to apply a little more pressure when removing the Commander from your pocket. The remainder of your fingers will sit naturally on the pocket clip.

I'm sure you'll be a 'Wave Master' soon enough and you'll be waving your knife from every pocket and inch of your waist band very soon!

I use my index finger like a hook, and I hook the end of the pocket clip and then pull horizontal out of pocket. Baddabing, open knife. Everything else depends on how you personally feel secure in grip.

My answer to that has been:

Oil, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave, wave . . . repeat as necessary

Getting it down? None. You should be able to get "The Wave" in about five tries. The "trick" is sliding to the rear. (the knife, not you :D) You've always lifted your knife out of your pocket, straight up. You have to retrain yourself a tad. On about the second try your going to get the blade about half open. You'll do it again on the third try. Now do it with a little "snap" . . . POW! You did it. Try again with the "snap" . . . POW, you got it down.

At no time do they leave my hand . . . that was a joke :D

My thumb goes to the nonclip side, my index finger cocked in the curved portion of the lower clip, my middle finger grips the edge of the clip and the tip of my ring finger at the butt above the clip. The pressure to grip the knife is between my thumb, my middle finger and ring finger. No real pressure on the index finger, just "indexing" my grip.

From this grip I can slash or stab. Given a fraction of a second (if I have the luxury) I can readjust my grip to a saber grip.

No they don't.

But, may I be so presumptuous as to suggest my favorite "Adhesive Bandage":

CURAD® EXTREME LENGTHS ® are 50% longer than regular bandages and can wrap around your finger twice. They won't fall off… we guarantee it.

I never go to a show or training with out a fresh box and thier not kidding. These suckers stay put. You have to cut them off to remove them.

As has been pointed out, if the knife has a serial number, it'll be under the thumb disk. All EKI knives are dated (eg. "98", "99", "2000", "2001")

I haven't. But I have moved the clip to the other side to make "Lefty" models.

Thanks for the responses.

I've taken notes on the different techniques and will try each one out when I'm alone. The only thing worse than hurting yourself is hurting yourself with witnesses. :D

I've loosened the pivot screw to the point where the blade starts to wobble and its still a little stiff (but better) so it looks like I'll have to take it apart for a cleaning and perhaps an adjustment.

The more I play with this thing the more I'm convinced that it would benifit from having the clip moved over about 2 tenths of an inch. It would provide a little shelf for landing the ring and pinkie safely out of the way of the blade slot.

I've also realized that the pocket clip is very tight. I'll have to spring that back a little too.

Thanks Again.

In order to get your official Emerson Wave Master certificate you have to send one of the moderators $20 and one pair of pants with the pocket frayed.

I did a couple of searches for a procedure on adjusting the ball detent. I was not able to produce anything productive. Can some one point one out.
