Hi All,

First post here, obviously. Have been a knife guy for years, but got my first Emerson last week. I can see how its got a following, and may not be for everyone because its a "different knife" that you have to feel to really get the whole perception of. I like it.

Anyway, question is this: when I lock the knife with my thumb, the liner overlaps about 30%. When I lock it via the wave coming out of my pocket, its much more engaged, almost to the point where I have trouble disengaging it.

Normal? Is it still safely locked "via thumb"? I'm a rancher on the side, and the knife will get some aggressive use.

Second question which has been asked somewhere before, but tips for Edgepro Apex and the Commander? With such a wide bevel, is it hard to keep the flat part of the blade stable, or is it prone to rocking? I have the narrow stones, and I'm hoping to maintain the curves as best I can.

Thanks -

John

Your Commander locking up like that is normal and yes it's still safe even if you open with just your thumb.

I can't help you with the sharpening part of your question as I do not own a EP, all I use for my Commanders when it's sharpening time is the Spyderco Sharpmaker, quick and efficient.

The lock, much like the pivot, will smooth out with use, but definitely engages deeper with the greater force caused by waving or inertia opening.

For recurves, I too use the Spyderco Sharpmaker, so I'm afraid I'm also unable to answer your EP question.

Enjoy the Commander.

Yes, enjoy that folder.
I have a Commander incoming.
Thank you, Mike Dye.

If the stickiness bothers you, I've found a lot of success with either the graphite from a #2 pencil or some sharpie on the tang of the blade. As far as the edge pro goes, I haven't had any problems with mine. And after you beat on the blade for awhile, post up another thread with some pics! That'd be cool.

I never minded a sticky lock, as long as it wasn't too hard to unstuck, as I knew that eventually it would break in to just-right.

Carter - you use the narrow stones and just sharpen as usual? I'll do the sharpie method for checking bevel, but what degree do you use?

Like I stated, I don't have an EP, but I use the corners on my Spydie Sharpmaker for recurves. The flat portions on the Sharpmaker stones, which would equate to a broader stone on an EP, don't always make full contact through the recurve section.

So yes, you would want to use the thinnest (most narrow) stones on your EP for the Commander.

It's funny, because I actually don't have the narrow stones. And I've never Not been able to get it absolutely razor sharp. Even the normal stones work, so you should have no problem :) When you use the sharpie trick, if it's not hitting the apex, raise the arm a little and vice versa. You may have to thin out the bevel some, because since it's a chisel grind the edge angle is usually steeper from the factory than a normal v edge knife, and I've never had any emerson come with lower than about a 25 degree edge. Hope that helps

FWIW, I have an EdgePro Apex with the standard stones and they are not able to follow the blade profile of a standard Commander. If you place the stone on the recurved part of the blade you can easily see where the center of the stone is not in contact with the blade. If you attempt to sharpen with the stones you only get wear at the edges of the stones. My EdgePro is relatively new and I don't use it all the time so perhaps my stones are flatter than most folks.

Enjoy your Commander and use it well. One of the best knife designs ever, IMHO. The lock up you describe is normal, particularly if you Wave it vigorously.

Same problem with the Wicked Edge.

The edges of the Sharpmaker are pretty much the only way that really works on my Super Commander & my UBR IMHO.
