My new comp axe, 7 1/2 x 7 1/2 Supergrind set up for white pine.

Ordered the head directly from Tuatahi - about a ten week wait, which I found frustrating, but given the kind of wait times I hear mentioned for some of the custom hawks, I guess I don't have anything to complain about. I hung the head on one of my custom handle blanks, and as you can see, have not done the final shaping yet.

This one was meant to be a smaller, all-around axe. I have been accused of being too attached to my giant axes.....some refer to my axe box as "the shovel box." My next axe is going to be even smaller, about 7.5 x 7.25 for springboard, but I am already dreaming of a max-size axe for hardhit contests - 9 x 8.25. Muwahahahah

Beautiful axe. Looks like there's a hole in the head for a pin - is that something you ever do?

Always. Most shows require it. When you think of the damage a 6 lb razor blade would do if it flew into a crowd of people, you can understand why.

Additionally, most shows require that you finish facing the audience, so that if you lose purchase on your axe at the end of the chop, it flies back into the area for competitors/organizers, all of which have signed waivers...

Very nice, like the storage set up too...

Thanks.

That box was done for me by one of the fellows that competes on the Stihl Series. I would say that 75% of serious competitors use the same box. It holds the axes really securely, and is pretty light. Given the value of the contents, you can't be too careful with your comp gear.

This box was purchased to replace a box that a friend had loaned me. That box was awesome - fully dovetailed and made of 3/4 plywood. I could use it as a seat at shows, or, I suspect, as a wheel chock for a semi on a 15% grade, but it weighed about as much empty as this one does full.

Another question if you don't mind: did you make it from scratch or do you buy pre-shaped blanks?

I buy blanks from a fellow in New Brunswick. He does, however, cut them to my specs. When I receive them, they have a HUGE knob below the swell. I get them like that so I can adjust the length to suit the particular axe, and so I have extra wood to hammer on for hanging.

Incidentally, the handle on the last axe in the box (with green painted head) is from the same guy. That is my practice/rigger axe, and the handle has been on it for a bit over a year.

Thats a Beautiful Axe! (the box is uber cool as well!)
Some day when i'm more flush with cash i'm gonna have to get one of those axes!

Hmmm a guy in New Brunswick you say? I'm currently looking for a handle for a handle-less double-bit i have. I'm in Newfoundland and not having much luck finding one. Any chance you could post the guys contact info or email me the info?

I am trying to find his contact info right now. A couple of people have asked for it. His name is Rod Cumberland, and everyone in Eastern Canada who is around timbersports probably knows him. I'll post it when I find it.

chuck is that one of Mike Slingerland axe box he this made

Yes. In case you can't see from the pictures, it is a dark blue box with a heavy dose of gold flake mixed in. He can have them done up in almost any color you want, and with different color lids (ie. The Swiss choppers all have red boxes with white tops).

That axe is so beautiful .....What does it weight?

Thanks. I didn't weight it before I hung it, but the head is probably around 5 lbs, or a bit more.

My heaviest axe probably weighs around 6.25 - 6.5.

In the "looking for racing axes" thread, I am loading pictures of all of my comp axes, if you are interested.

That's not to bad for weight.

What size hole and roll pins do you use on the head?
