New cqc-14 snubby movement quite tight

Hi,

I just purchased a new cqc-14 snubby and it opened quite nicely but had a fair bit of horizontal blade play.

I tightened up the pivot screw a little and the horizontal play went away. Now though, it squeeks a little when opening and closing. It isn't binding but isn't quick at all anymore.

If I loosen the screw to get any amount of good motion, the horizontal play comes back.

Any options on this?

I did add a fair bit of 3-in-1 oil but didn't really change anything.

Other than that, no complaints.

Thanks.

if tightening/loosening the pivot screw doesnt help ya might have to send it back to EKI for adjustment, they do it for free and its usually pretty quick too.

it shouldnt have much if any play imho.

Thanks. Yeah, the difference is just 1/4 turn of the screw.

For instance when the pivot screw is tight enough, so there is no horizontal movement, the action is a little tight and squeaks a little.

1/4 turn of the screw looser, and the action is pretty good, but a noticable amount horizontal movement, not a huge amount, but enough to want to reduce it.

Maybe it just needs to be broken in a little. I've only had it for 4 hours :)

I think I'll leave it a little tight and see how it goes. The knife is really solid, so a little stiff action feels appropriate :)

This has the black blade, and I can see that some of the black has been worn.

It is a groove, in the black coating. When the blade is fully opened, on the pocket clip side, on the non-wave side of the blade, there is a 3/4 inch curved groove in the black where it has worn down.

Maybe that is part of it, that some of the black has to be worn off to be smooth.

I think it is totally fine though. Just wasn't buttery smooth out of the box. Now, after maybe 200 open/close motions it is better.

I love the large handle and the smaller blade.

No horizontal play at all, no vertical either. I can open it one handed (not fast), can use the wave feature, can open it a little and then flick it.

I can still hear a little bit of squeak when I open it, but not as much.

If any of this sounds strange, or normal, please let me know.

Thanks again.

Just use the knife, it will wear the blade coating on the pivot and then it really smooths out. I found 3in1 oil gummed up and attracted dust/dirt tho..... I used a dry lube spray for coating tablesaw blades (BOSTICH) (no more squeak after that)

Great blade choice BTW, My snubby is my hardest used Emerson blade

Thanks. Before I saw your post I took the blade out and cleaned off the 3-in-1 oil and any residue from the black coating on the blade.

You're right, it does get rubbed off where the ball and the other stopper touch the blade (inside the liners).

There was just a little bit of black stuff in there, not much though.

Thanks again, now to use the knife and stop listening for any squeaks :)

I'm glad I got this model Emerson, was recommended by S & R Knives outside Toronto. Really nice shop, glad they showed it to me.

All new EKIs need a bit of time to wear in, usually takes a few days of just opening
and closing the knife and a bit of tweeking to the pivot to keep it all spot on.

Im sure it will be just fine in a few days to a week
