i have an emerson cqc8 that is a great knife.

and i was watching nutnfancy's video on his cqc 8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oY0HQx3g_SE

great review imo well shot and great camera quality for a youtube review! (i don't agree with his website review. it might not be the fanciest but it is simple and i like their website)

i noticed nutnfancys cqc 8 was 2005 like mine

then i noticed in another cqc 8 video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNu3QA9cAwU

and on the emerson page that the tip of the knife is a bit different in the more modern cqc8's then in the 05's

and what is unfortunate for me is that these new models weight 4.6 oz's according to the emerson website.

my basic problem is that i have run into a weight issue because i want to balance the weight. my emerson weighs 5 oz it is a 05 model

. . i want a second emerson wave for my left pocket ...

i do not like the commander
I really like the cqc 8 design because it is slim and fits into the pocket well

have looked at the cqc 15 if i had to get another knife the the left pocket but i think it might be too large compared to the 8 , but the weight of the cqc15 (4.8 oz) is very close to my 2005 CQC-8s mass ( 5.0 oz)

don't like how the 10 doesn't have a thumb disk

maybe someone has a left handed 05 cqc 8 to sell? or a 05 cqc8 to sell, and then perhaps i can send it to emerson to have it modified???? i hope

i've been thinking how to balance the 2005s cqc8s weight which is 5 oz's

i've thought about getting possibly a gentle jim to replace the 8 which also looks like it is quite slim when in the pocket ... but then again i think the 8 is really cool (i think the 2005 8 looks better then the newer ones too which led me to not really want to get a left handed new cqc8... not that my opinion matters just want to balance the 05's 5.0 oz weight)

any advice? i ph33r contacting emerson and asking him to make me a 05

I really don't know how you can distinguish .4 of an oz of weight? Don't know what to tell ya on that one. Good luck, and keepem sharp

That's just being anal about it. Don't think it out too much. Or you can sell your old one and get two new ones.

All the newer Emersons have a swedge which was a change that most every Emerson fan supported and called for, in addition to the new stonewashed finish.

As far as the weight goes, well, that's tricky..... throw a lanyard on it with a skull bead or two, that should make up the difference! :D

how much larger would the cqc 15 be in the pocket then the cqc8 ? is it much bulkier?

yea i suppose you guys are right about the minor weight difference

thinking i might go with a cqc15 not sure

good point

dang 12 looks really hefty too i dig the titanium

too bad there are no cqc14 black no serrations on the bay i would definitely get one

You aren't by chance trying to model your knife habits after nutnfancy are you? I cannot understand why people feel the need toget upset by half an ouce in their pocket. Personally I cannot tell the difference when Im on the go.

As Buffalohump mentioned above the new Emersons have a nice swedge towards the blade tip. This removal of minimal steel probably accounts for the difference in weight. But.........for Emerson collectors the "swedge" is something to be desired and it had been requested over the years for Emerson to bring back designs that included a swedge.
Personally I would think this is a minor issue and I would just purchase a new CQC-8 in stonewashed finish with the swedge and never look back. Once you have the stonewashed finish in your hand the 2005 version will be less of a prize in your eyes!!!:D

I think I will like a black cqc8 instead
But I've never seen the stonewash in person

Ended up going with a cqc 14 stonewsh plain blade

Always wanted a snub nose and decided to see what the stonewash was all about after further thought

Still thinking about getting my current cqc 8 modded by Emerson for lhc
And resharpened by Emerson

I wonder how much that will run me

Then I'll have to decided on either a cqc 8 10 13 or 15 for my new rhc

Good choice, although I would have gone with the 15 myself. The stonewash is a considerable improvement over the old finishes.

I don't think you will get Emerson to 'mod' or 'customise' one of their knives. In fact doing so normally voids the warranty.

There are a few guys who do excellent pimp work on Emersons, most of them hang on USN.

I guess I don't mean mod of customize in the traditional sense.

If I sent emerson my cqc8 do you think they would

"PLEASE NOTE: SINCE WE ARE OFTEN BACKORDERED ON LEFT-HAND KNIVES, WE ALSO PROVIDE AN OPTIONAL OPTION TO HAVE THE POCKET CLIP PLACED ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF A STANDARD RIGHT HAND KNIFE SO IT CAN BE USED FOR LEFT SIDE POCKET CARRY. THIS DOES NOT CHANGE THE LOCK, IT WILL STILL BE A RIGHT HAND LOCK. THE CHARGE FOR CHANGING THE CLIP IS $25.00 PLUS SHIPPING. PLEASE CALL 310-212-7455 FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION."

place the pocket clip on the left side? or do they only do that for new knives you order from emerson directly?

Or if emerson doesn't do that pocket clip switch for older knives.... maybe i can get someone to pimp out my cqc 8 to be a lhc with the more sturdy/custom handles ?

http://www.gusstrand.com/blog/?p=568 ferrrk has some really classy designs. anyone care to shoot me a pm with his email or contact info? or anyone else who does equaliy quality framelock custom handle work. after viewing that webpage i'm actually thinking of getting the new snubby ferrrk'ed and then with the additional weight i might meet the magical 5 oz balance.

this ferrk custom work looks like it makes the lock a lot stronger i.e not being a liner lock per say this is the frame lock ferrk i guess its called?

Blades:
i'm not quite sure how much the super cqc 8 weighs :(
