Just curious, what did the new Cripple Creek knock off's made by GEC retail for?
I had a friend buy one off of e bay thinking it was a real one made by Bob.
Thanks,
BB

I'm not an authority on this, but I thought GEC built them under contract or licensed the trademark. Hopefully, someone can clear this up as I am very interested in the answer to your question.

Obviously, either my memory is bad (very good possibility) or my information was bad (a possibility). Please see following posts by others for the real story.

Don't know Bobby. I did not follow them other than what some folks posted here.

Bends me out of shape that they may have been misrepresented by the ebay seller.
Tell your friend to drop in here. We have some guys with beautiful collections by Bob and they know their stuff. I know you already know Greg. ;). He will keep your friend on the straight and narrow. :D.

SMKW now owns the Cripple Creek name. I believe the GEC built stag models were around $129 - $149.

It may not matter to anyone but me and a few others, but I do not consider them legitimate Cripple Creek knives unless Bob has struck a deal with them and gets some royalties. Yeah, I know that maybe they found a loophole to acquire the name and are producing them legally in their eyes, but that still does not make it right if Bob did not make a deal with them.
I've been stung by one of these companies before with my designs and hate to see the Cripple Creek brand diluted.
As much as I hate to say so, I think a serious Cripple Creek collector should have one of each in their collection only for historical purposes to tell the whole story about the brand to future generations. Just like the Black Jack versions have their place in CC history. I definitely would not buy one just to own a Cripple Creek knife. There are too many real ones still floating around.

I was eying a Cripple Creek knife made by Queen a while ago before i stumbled upon a thread discussing the differences between one of the GEC/Queen and a genuine Cargill Cripple Creek.

With Greg's help i was able to really appreciate the original CC knives. Needless to say, I ended up with one of the originals. One of my favorite slippies i might add.

Greg is a friend of mine and one of the real authorities on CC. The new ones are made with crap steel from what i have learned thus far.

Whoever is currently using Cargill's trademark is having knives made by GEC and Queen. The knives are not any different than what GEC or Queen already have in their catalog lineup except that you pay extra for having Cripple Creek somewhere on the knife. That has been my observation. You are better off just buying one of their knives without the CC logo and save the added expense or buy a real Cripple Creek . Real CC's will have the year they were made on them. On the blade or tang. There are some exceptions to that rule but the originals are quite easy to pick out from the current batch of knock-offs. There are no Cripple Creeks that look like GEC or Queen knives. There are no GEC or Queen knives that look like Cripple Creeks. The patterns and the handle materials of the knock-offs aren't even close. I have posted lots of photos in this forum that a simple search and a bit of time will show you the difference in tang stamps and the rest. If they were not made by Cargill they are not Real Cripple Creeks. Also, there hasn't been any Cripple Creeks made since 1996. So any new knife cannot be a Cripple Creek. Like I have said before, I can paint "Ferrari" on my GMC pickup but that won't make it a Ferrari and I definitely wouldn't try and sell it to you as one either. That would be kinda dishonest or stupid, now wouldn't it.

I reckon one can own an authentic Cripple Creek custom slippy produced by Bob Cargill.

And/Or they can buy the bootleg.

The choice is pretty clear if'n you ask me which is which.

Greg, not only are the CCs you've shown on this forum among the most beautiful and desireable of slippies, but many are also very unique patterns. Plus, the new GEC made CCs don't even equal the regular GEC lineup for quality of stag and steel, so why even pay the same for them, much less an even higher price tag just because of the name. As Shakespeare said, "What's in a name? that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet;" . . . and in this case, the original Cargill CCs are the rose!

You're right SunnyD. So long as you know one from the other.
Greg

One must do his or her research and thereby performing ones do diligence prior to making a purchase..

Or,, in other words, buyer beware.  ;) :(

I've been looking at original CCs for a while now. Greg has the one I want and I'll find one someday. Here is a link: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=7992275#post7992275

I got one of the new 2009 CCs from one of the guys here for $90 and I love it. When I bought it, I saved $10-15 from retail plus shipping. I was happy with the price and when I received it I was even more satisfied. He was straight up when selling it as a GEC made CC and I understood. I realize Bob didn't make it but I love it just the same. It's a punkin seed jack. The nick style and 3 legged buff sheild set this one off for me. It's a great knife; well made in the USA, good looking bone, sharp blades, nice size and only 200 made. Here is a link to it: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=693822&highlight=cripple+creek

Sorry about your friend getting duped! What type of new CC did he get?

Greg- as per all your knives you show us-very nice, thank you...now where do I go to check out more about cripple creek and it's history of manufacture?
Cheers everyone, have a great weekend!

Here's a link to Bob's site:http://bobcargillknives.com/ and here's one to photos and info.
http://cripplecreekknifecollector.webs.com/apps/photos/ Some of the info on Bob's site was lost but there is still quite a bit there. Both sites were put together by individuals and not companies. Bob's site has been up for quite some time now in one form or another and the other is fairly recent and done by one of our forum members. Both sites were created by individuals with a desire to contribute info about Cripple Creeks and how they came about and how they represent what one man with a talent and creative mind can accomplish.
If anybody ever wants to know if a knife that is being represented as a Real Cripple Creek is legitimate or not, just contact me. I will do my best to help out. One thing is for sure, if it comes in a cute little tube shaped container, it ain't a Real Cripple Creek.

Greg...that is very interesting reading-thanks very much for putting that up.
I feel quite embarrased asking what may seem like silly questions...but there is much for me to learn, and everytime you guys put up these stunning knives...it makes me sit up and appreciate just how for I have to go on this journey.

There is no such thing as a silly question. I have heard lots of silly answers tho. I would rather someone just said they didn't have a answer than just make one up.
