When you guys & gals get a new CRK, do you have a ritual that you do.....? Anything special while unboxing, anything special once you unbox it....?

For me, when I get a NIB in box from CRK or a Dealer, I just admire it. Take pics of it. No taking it apart as its brand new and no need too.

When I get a pre-owned CRK like a sebenza for instance. I take it apart and thoroughly wash each and every part. Dry and wipe off all the moisture and let it air dry the rest of the way. I then put it back together and lube it up. I feel it makes it mine by doing so.

Two days ago, I did the same with my 2nd Large P sebenza that I got.

Today I got a small regular from a forum friend and just got done putting it back together and lubing it up. First small regular I have had in awhile. This one is a keeper.

Next week will be the same thing as another Large Regular is on hold for me.

I think I am done for awhile....lol. Its a great feeling.

Because I'm into the older SA made fixed blades my arrivals are always pre-owned and seldom. After a fondle and admiring appraisal my ritual is to enter all vital statistics into an Excell speadsheet, that then somehow it feels like its fully mine......

My ritual consists of sitting out front, smoking a ton of cigarettes, drinking a few cups of coffee, and admiring the hell out of it:D I'll wait till I have the time to do so before I open up my new Seb.

I also roll the blue cloth up, put it back in the box, then the box goes in a drawer with my other CRK boxes. . .and yes I have an entire drawer saved for CRK's only:thumbup:

Sounds very familar :D

I usually end up taking it apart and removing the lanyard pin and putting it back together, regardless of new or not. Though, if it's new, I don't re-oil or anything, just pop the pin and lanyard out and put it back together. Used, on the other hand, gets the above mentioned cleaning/oiling procedure.

I usually take them apart and reblast them first thing, well thats what I did with the small Micarta Insingo that showed up today.:D

Nyefmaker, totally spaced on saying BIG congrats on your Regulars!

I really don't have a set ritual. I usually just take a deep breath and slice open the outer box with my current EDC. Then take another deep breath and open the inner box. After that, I just look and admire from all angles and start opening and closing (Click! Clack!) and repeat as many times as possible.

On a related note, a few years back I read a thread from a guy who had problems getting past the looking stage with a new knife. He said that the more the knife cost him, the harder it was for him to actual start using it. But he said that he had come up with a solution. I was new to knives and felt the same way about using an expensive knife (I had just purchased my first CRK, a Large UG Sebenza--gorgeous thing! and I just couldn't bare to use it), so I was curious to hear his sage advice. To my utter amazement, he said that when he opened the box on arrival, he would pick up the knife and immediately drop it on the floor!:eek: Bingo! Break-in period over! Well.... needless to say, I haven't adopted his ritual!

Enjoy your new knife (and try not to drop it ;))!

I disassemble, send the blade to Bos and then use the knife once it's back. Ritual done. I don't collect em, every Seb I get is a user. So I really don't do too much admiring since they are always the same model, ha.

I find carrying it for a week straight gets me over the jitters. Dropping it on the floor? ...To each their own :p

I fold up the polishing cloth with the Chris Reeve part facing the top, into a sqaure, after I've taken pics of the unboxing. Then I rest my Sebenza, small micarta Insingo on top of the squared cloth. Basically it's a Sebenza nest or little bed for it to rest on. It sits next to my laptop, resting, waiting. ha I put the pics up as screen savers on my laptop along with other internet pics of current and future knives/purchases.

I own only two CRKs, a large reg. Seb bought new in 2002, and an Umnumzaan bought new late last year. I don't have any particular ritual per se, except that after I take it out of the box and admire it/check it, I remove the lanyard. When I got my Zaan, after I untied the lanyard and was pulling it out of the pin, the pin dropped out, so I never had to disassemble anything. I like the plain lanyard hole. I will say there is definitely a different feeling I get when I receive a new CRK.

Well, I usually set the package aside and do not immediately open it, then come back to it later and welcome the knife to its new home by a thorough inspection under a bright light. Then just enjoy owning it.
