Some pix of my new Cruwear Mule. The scales are barbwire micarta, the tubes are also micarta. I started the shaping with 60 grit sanding drms and sandpaper, all the way to 2000 grit. I followed with buffing wheels, using black, brown, red, and white compounds. This barbwire micarta, with burlap as the fabric base, is great stuff. I like it!

Looks good. I haven't seen (or heard of) barbed wire micarta before. Where can I buy some?

Check out Texas Knifemaker's Supply (http://www.texasknife.com/vcom/index.php?cPath=587_826_841_943). Right now, it's only available in 5" x 2 1/2" x 1/2" pieces. I wrote them, asking if other sizes are available, and they're trying to get the supplier to provide some. The 1/2" thickness was way too much for a small knife like a Mule, and I had to grind away an awful lot of it. This micarta uses a burlap base rather than canvas, linen, or paper, and it shows great patterns.

That's awesome, Doug! I've been drooling over that barbwire micarta for a while now, but resisted due to the 0.5" thickness. I'd end up wasting a good bit of it for a Mule scale - but yours turned out fantastic!

Where did you get the micarta tubes - also from Texas Knifemaker Supply?

I got the tubes from a company called McMaster Carr that someone in one of the forums told me about. They have a lot of different sizes but color selection is limited. Plus, it seems to work fine once inside the holes but you could easily crush it with a Leatherman, so I'm thinking it's not great for heavy duty structure. Should be fine with a knife. Good luck!

I agree that the 0.5" thickness is a drawback. Maybe if enough people swamp Texas Knifemaker's with requests for thinner pieces, as well as longer ones, they might have more leverage with the supplier.
