Here's my latest submitted for your interest and comments and advice.
A few notes:
- I whittled the haft down pretty extreme because it came with quite a warp.
- The serpent etch is based on some Norse patterns from the Meehan book. In comparison to Celtic scrollwork, Norse is more free-flowing, less geometric or mathmatical, if you will. I defer to our Scandinavian and Euro forum members on those matters.
- The etch coloring came out bimodal, I think due to what steel was in the head. You can see a line there. Oh well.
- Casy-Birch plum browning for a finish on the head.
- My second sheath and overstrike guard. Used some standard leatherworking tools to emboss a serpent on the sheath, pretty rough but I learned a lot.
- Hope you enjoy! Pass along any tips if you think of any.

The reason you got that two tone effect on the bit is because Cold Steel differentially tempers them.

The decoration looks really good. I can dig it

Yeah I figured it had to do with how they treat the steel. Still, on my last frontier mod, there was no line, so something was different this time around.

Thanks again everyone. Sumo the overstrike guard was a real PITA. I cut out a paper form to use as measure, then cut the leather based on that. I wanted it to slide up tight under the head. So, I tried to cut it just a bit too small. I sort of cheated on the sewing. Rather then punch holes with an awl I just dremeled. Advantage is speed and its easier to lace, but awled holes would be more secure since they close up, I think. I went with the dremeled holes because I'm pretty clumsy with the needles and was always poking through the thread.... what a mess. I used a saddle stitch. Anyhow, in the end I got what I want. The overstrike guard slides right up tight and jams before the head with little space between. It doesnt slide off on its own but you can grab it and slip it down. I could always glue it up there but I like being able to de-construct the hawk, pull head off, etc.

I did, it was moist while I was sewing. Allowed me to pull and manipulate things more. Honestly while dremmeling out the pace holes may have some drawbacks it sure makes it easy.
