So I just got this brand new Cold Steel Recon Tanto in SK5 steel. (pic below with my other two CS tantos).
First impressions of a new production Recon Tanto if any prospective buyers are curious:
-came very sharp, but slightly less so than the Master Tanto... could be just my perception or the steel (SK5 vs San Mai VG10).
-handle feels great; same handle as SRK
-edge bevel grinds are well done and appear even; I like the hollow grind on the side (tip appears to be saber); makes the knife more "slicy" for normal knife tasks vs just "stabby & choppy" tactical tasks
-sheath: typical Cold Steel secure-X that I needed to sand down a bit the little retention bumps in the lip of the opening so that the knife was easier to put in and take out.
-only flaw that I see is that the grind geometry on the tip is a bit off; where the flat grind of the tip angle starts from the flat of the blade side starts about 1/8" farther back than the other side. Only noticeable when looking directly down at the spine of the blade, and doesn't affect functionality. For a $45 knife I can live with that minor issue.
Looking forward to actually using this one. It's inexpensive enough I don't mind it getting used heavily & showing that wear, whereas the Master Tanto is more of a eye candy knife for me.
