New custom cqc7 is REALLY gritty and stiff when opening and closing

Hey guys,

I just got my first ever emerson.... a new custom cqc7 yesterday and from what I can see the previous owner probably had it stowed away in a safe for years and never touched it. When opening and closing the action is extremely gritty and so stiff that it feels like the pivot screw has been cranked down. I tried loosening it and even though it's a tad looser, the action is still gritty and rough.

From what I read during my research emersons need a break-in period. Does my description sound about normal for a brand new emerson?

Sounds normal to me! Open and close it while watching a movie. The ball detents need to wear into the coating of the blade.

Sounds normal to me too. My custom is 4months old now and is still a little stiff. It is much better now but has taken a while compared to the standard production models.

It's normal. My new Emerson "routine" is use it heavily and repeatedly open and close it while watching tv or something similar over the course of a month or so. Then disassemble, clean, re-lubricate, and use it. Works every time, all my Emerson's open like they are on bearings now.

Thanks for the response guys. Kinda reminds me of a Les Baer 1911. When it's brand new it's almost impossible to rack it but then breaks in nicely.

This needs to be a Sticky.
TLO- Congratz, on one of the best folders ever.

This needs to be a Sticky.

There are a lot of questions that could be stickies, but too many stickies, and the new threads, or questions would become way down at the bottom of the stickies.

Besides another reason not too have too many stickies, we just might loose a fresh ideas on how to solve or eliminate an old problem.

Forums are about questions, answers, free exchange of information, and different people opinions. A lot of people on these forum have different life experiences, so there are many ways to accomplish the same thing, and many methods to accomplish a solution, and solve problem.

I vote for no more stickies. JMHO.

I was kidding.
What's my knife worth?
I mean, how many times have we heard this question, re: stiff and gritty?
No offense to the OP.

But without those new people asking the same old questions, the forum would die from in activity, and people would not return because no activity.

Sorry for the redundant question guys, but the grittyness and stiffness did not feel normal at all. It literally felt like somebody put sand in there and cranked the pivot screw down to 90ft lb. I've been playing with it for the past two days now (my thumb is RAW) and it's getting a lot smoother. I don't know what it is about this knife but I can't put it down!

Now I just need to find custom CQC6 that isn't $290843209432. :D

Oh yea.... am I the only person who likes his Emerson without a pocket clip? It looks so much nicer and feels a lot less bulky. Plus, I hate to say this but the pocket clip is foogly.

Just keep playing with it. The custom's with thicker liners have a much stronger safe-d-tent in them hence the added resistance. The satin finish is not as smooth compared to the stonewash finish IMO. Be patient, especially if you are planning to keep it. Things do wear in and eventually wear out though some take longer than others. Fan of the pocketclip myself, feel other pocketclips look ugly LOL.

TLO- No prob. I apologize for being short.
Nath make a nice pocket clip. :)
Enjoy your Emerson(s).

Actually, Emerson pocket clips are my favorite part of the knife. They do what a pocket clip is intended to do, and rarely bend, break, or distort (notice how rare anyone complains about an Emerson pocket clip bending). Enjoy your new Emerson.
