Thanks, folks, for your guidance with this beautiful folder. I took your advice and chose to forego the pins in the ram's horn. She's a beaut in my opinion. Ordered on Friday, March 16 and delivered yesterday, April 19. Not too shabby!

So, to recap, she's got ram's horn scales, nickel silver bolsters, finger grooves, and S30V:

Here she is alongside another Idahoan beauty queen:

This will not be my last custom shop order to be sure. I'm very impressed with the knife overall.

Thanks again, and best to all.

Those scales are beautifully blended and finished to fit your hands. There is some nice work in that classic knife.

Hah! Thanks for chiming in, Mr. Fowler! Your ears musta been burnin'...

I remember you and I standing in line, waiting to get into a restaurant at Blade back in the early '00's, and I was admiring one of your pronghorns. To show how durable the horn was, you took it from shoulder level and dropped it repeatedly onto the tile floor with absolutely no damage to it whatsoever. It made me re-think the durability of natural materials to say the least.

I've been pining for one of your pronghorns for years. Something in the 4.5" variety. One of these days...

Good times, Sir.

You are welcome Professor it is my pleasure.

The reason I chimed in was because of the skill of the man who developed that handle. The way he worked it demonstrates his respect for the handle materials and understanding of the knife he was working with, to me it shows the knife as a single well developed total package.

Looks great, glad to see that you went with the S30V it's excellent stuff, especially Buck's. I've been jonesing for a custom shop 110 for quite some time but just keep puting it off.

That's very nice. I have a few custom 110s, (stag, elk, buffalo horn) but not rams horn. I may have to change that soon, as I do like it a lot.
I'm curious what the advice was with others not to go with pins. Was it aesthetics or something else? Myself, I've always preferred to have the pins & would go that way again.

Hi Prof,

That is a fantastic looking CS knife. No is it for looking at or is it going to be a user?

Haven't decided. I want to use it, but I'm sure I'm not the only one around here with too many knives! :)

As far as the pins were concerned, folks advised me against them for the horn for fear of developing cracks down the line.

You don't have to worry about sheep horn cracking because of pins. It is tough stuff, to my knowledge toughest and strongest natural material there is.

I once drilled a hole in a piece of horn and tried to split it with a tapered punch, the punch stuck in the horn. Naturally with some strong hits the horn split, but with much more force than a pin could exert on a handle slab. I don't use pins because they are not necessary with the right bonding material.

I have always preferred pins and 95% of my Custom Shoppe knives are pinned. I find that it lends an 'old world' charm to the knife. As for cracking, I have pins on Sambar, Elk, Ram Horn, Buffalo and Cow bone and I have yet to see a crack.

I've never experienced any problems either in regards to cracks. I'm with you in terms of what pins add to the knife. For me, they simply look like they belong there.
I bought a mint, unused 112 w/box here a couple years ago with elk scales & no pins. It's very nice, but I would have preferred having them. To each his own.

Pardon my ignorance, but I can't seem to find the Buck Custom Shop site that offers the rams horn option.

Could someone clue me in? I have a weakness for rams horn.

Thanks.
