I'm getting close to finishing up a new design for my father in law's birthday this month. I was going to do a horizontal hand rubbed satin finish on this one, but the belt finish from the Trizact 45x was looking good enough that I didn't want to mess with it, so here it is so far......

3/16" stock ATS-34, 59rc by Peters, flat ground, black canvas micarta slabs with red G-10 liners, stainless hardware.

Thanks for looking!

Whether you go horizontal, or vertical - I would finish the whole knife in that direction

ie
machine satin the handle side before glue up

Sometimes I like to see a blade that's all horizontal, and sometimes I like the all vertical belt finish look, but I've seen plenty of blades that I thought looked good that were a combination of the two finishes. I don't see why it has to be one or the other. Symmetry is great, but sometimes contrasting grinds, finishes, colors, etc. can work out very nicely.......in my opinion;)

I'd have to agree there, Jon.

But, I built an ipe deck with every stainless screw showing. Some builders hide them - I just made sure they were straight.

Very nice knife, BTW.

Looks good.

I just purchased some trizact belts, and they really do leave a great finish.

Here are some update shots as the handle starts to take shape. This is just at 280 grit rhynowet paper. Gotta get it quite a bit smoother still, but my wrist is tired enough for one night....

BTW, the knife isn't supposed to look like the drawing in the picture. I just needed a white background and it was handy:D

Thanks, Erik!

This knife probably won't see any duty heavier than slicing limes at the bar, but I think he'll enjoy it:D

Nice work JM. I don't finish same direction everywhere either btw. Love the micarta liners. You can get natural canvas micarta pins to match it at McMaster Carr if you're interested.

Your stuff keeps getting cleaner and tighter, brother... you are improving with every knife. I await the next evolutionary leap, sir.

Thank you very much guys! I wanted to get a bit more done tonight but the wife is at work, I've got the kids, it's a school night, blah blah, you get the picture.......:D

Rick, that means a lot:thumbup:

Andy, the liners are G-10. Sometimes the colors are a bit more subdued, although it comes out more and more as I get to finer grits when hand sanding and then buffing. I like it so much more than the fiber material, and Chuck at Alpha has tons of it in LOTS of colors and thicknesses. He's reasonable as well.

Well, here is the finished product ready to be delivered to pops:) I'm hoping he'll enjoy it.

Thanks for following the progress guys:thumbup:
