I guess this a good place to have a rough drawing of a knife
I have been thinking about making for some time.
I am looking for all comments good or bad
Thanks Nathan

Love the blade, hate the handle. Too many points and sharp edges in the wrong places.

Overall looks good to me. But I don't like the upper guard. It mkes it impossible to hold theknife in choke position. It might look cooler without the upper guard too. Handle looks okay to me. Try to modify it with a coffin style handle.

try making a plastic or wood model of that, & see how it feels in the hand. Looks like the upper guard is going to get in the way, esp. since it places the thumb behind the index finger instead of over or in front of it?

Yes
I agree from all the feed back I am getting, the handle is going to be redone,to fit the hand better

Nathan, what would you use this style knife for? Is your intention to design an "artsy" type knife, because as a user this looks mighty uncomfortable in the hand.

Just my opinion and you asked............

When I drew the knife up,I really don't have any intention with an odd looking knife, this was just a knife I head in my head and I wanted to put it on paper.I do not lump my knives together as a Fighter, hunter,or an art knife.
You are correct the knife does need some revamping on the handle
this is why I want input on it.
Thanks Nathan:)

If it's the right size I don't think that handle will be uncomfortable. I just think it looks weird. It has an awkward unsymmetrical appearance. I would get rid of that little upper guard. The blade looks nice though.

I also like the blade shape, I have roughed out several differnt handle styles for this blade and I think the ones I have some up with
will really flow with the blade.
Keep your eyes on the forums you will see them soon;)
Thanks Nathan

Cool knife, I like the blade shape. The handle needs to be changed but....I LIKE the upper guard. I think it gives the knife character as well as a handy thumb rest especially if you grooved it heavily. Don't get rid of it yet, at least try it on a wooden mockup and see what needs to be modified. I find that you can't really tell what will work on a paper drawing alone, you must actually test it to see.

Peter
thanks, you have an eye for differnt style knives
You must have been reading my mind when you said about putting
groves in the top of the bolster.
You are also correct in your thinking about you don't really know what it will feel like until you make it 3D,I did a wooden one today
and it feels good in the hand.the only change is the bottom of the handle,it needed rounded it off some.Everything is not set in stone yet
there is still some testing to do.
thanks Nathan

i like it, BUT, there are two problems i see, first the bevel on the blade is nearly twice as wide on the belly than it is at the plunge. assuming the knife is the same thickness the whole way, this would make for either a very thick bevel at the plunge or a very thin bevel at the belly. also, i love the way the bottom of the handle drops down, but it creates the problem of having a thick handle, causing it to feel awkward around where the middle finger is placed. i suggest thinning it a bit from the top, while stretching the very last bit to create the bump on the end. like this:

Thanks for the input,I like the part with the back of the handle
But I don't care for square sholders on the plunge.I like a rounded
shoulder it it more pleaseing to the eye.I have not trouble with
thick spots near the plunge,It is all how you move the blade on the wheel, the edge near the plung is the same thickness all the way to the tip.My style of grinding has been greatly influanced By
Neil Blackwood, this grind is not easy to do but when done right
it makes for a very nice looking grind and also a stronger shoulder
Squared plunge cuts look to much like they were factory made.
Grinding is all about control,But I really like the blade handle
shape you put in there.very pleasing to the eye.
Nathan:)

what kind of grind are you putting on it and what are you grinding it with? last time i tried to do a bevel as wide as the one on the belly of your knife on my 8 inch wheel i ground THROUGH the blade about 1/4" above the edge(dont worry, practice piece). maybe my stock was just too thin, but that was what i was basing my opinions on. the red lines i put on the blade were just refering to the bevel and my comment about it being alot wider at the belly. perhaps i worded that wrong too, i meant to say that near the plunge, it would have a wider "V" shape (looking down from the tip) and that at the belly, it would have a thinner "v" shape.

and of course, when you're done, we're gonna need pictures.:D

Kenny
I grind most of my main bevels with a 10 inch wheel
I use a contact wheel that is 1 inch wide,I have more control
with a 1 inch wide belts.I can do a grind like in the picrue on 1/8 stock with no problem.I also grind on an eight inch wheel
on double hollows I use a 3 inch for the top grind and depending on the size of the blade I will use a 10 inch wheel.but if I am using thicker stock and I want a really deep hollow I can grind on an 8 and a six inch wheel.
The knife pictured here was 1/8 D2 stock and it was ground on
a 10 inch wheel
