I've been interested in Harpoon tips lately and decided to try one for a buildoff on JerzeeDevil

I present to you:

"Kestrel"

very first knife with my new mark.

.25 x 8.5" 1084 Blade,
Hollow ground
Harpoon tip
Sharpened clip and back edge of clip. Faceted spine
5" Blackwood handle
416 Stainless double guard

still need to make the sheath up.

I'd say that looks pretty impressive. I haven't seen that style of blade before, but I definitely like it.

I like it:thumbup: I'd prefer the swedge side just a hair shorter, but as it is it has a very aggressive look, there's no mistaking the business end of that one:D

That is just wicked - I love it. Very aggressive blade shape indeed. The beveled spine is a nice finishing touch and the new mark looks real good. Way to go man.

Really like your new mark, the handle, guard but don't like the harpoon clip.
Looks like it's sole purpose is just to be different.
Lose it or reduce it drastically and you have one heck of a knife design IMO.

That looks like it was a difficult one to pull off, you did it very well! I'd also suggest a bit smaller or less drastic rise from the spine --- or maybe just the top grind more closely mirroring the primary edge?

The new mark is very cool BTW.

Stephen, what is the purpose of the harpoon tip functionally? It obviously has some intimidation value, lol.

My understanding of the functionality is to raise the cutting edge from the level of the spine, providing for less resistance with a stabbing maneuver.

The theme for the buildoff was to make a BBQ knife so my design concept was to make a wild Hog hunting knife.

Hog hunting involves specially trained dogs who will corner and hold the hog down while the hunter goes in to finish it off. You would stab into the chest and pivot the blade back and forth to destroy vitals, thus the reason for the aggressive and sharpened clip

i like it, it seems perfectly designed for a forward-reverse grip, and the tip is in great allignment with the grip. i dont know anything about hog hunting but i have alot of experience stabbing things:D

When I saw this blade the other day I figured it was going to become part of a like that I would really like. I was right.

Very dramatic design indeed!

Would look great if flashed even for a couple of seconds
in a fast moving action movie!

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Thanks for the reply Stephen, that makes good sense and hopefully you'll get to use that knife for it's intended purpose
