Hey everyone,

I'm just now getting into knife making and have been working up a couple of prototypes in my free time. I figured before I actually destroy my material (1080) I'd see if anyone had any suggestions, or if my designs were worthwhile. If you do like any of them, let me know which is your favorite. Thanks in advance for any input.

Hey Jordan, the one in the middle is my fav, but I’d suggest that you make the spine less straight, from butt to tip. It just looks kinda blocky.

I don’t like the mini cleaver, ‘cause I don’t like mini cleavers, so I really can’t be much help there.

I don’t like the other one ‘cause it looks like you’re trying to do too much with it. It kinda looks like you’re trying to make a Sharpfinger type hunting knife with an american tanto blade, which kinda defeats the purpose of both types of knives.

Anyway, that’s my input, I hope it’s useful!

Input is always greatly appreciated!
I've reworked the design, and I'd love any more criticism that can be thrown my way!

I like the blade shape better, but the curve along the spine is pretty severe.

Look at this one, simple, elegant with a slight curve to round things out a bit...

Obviously it’s a different knife than the one you’re making but it has that subtle curve.

If you take your initial design, and just kinda bend it a tiny bit, you’ll get more of what you started out with, but a bit more pleasing lines.

Yes, you went too drastic. Make the handle more like what you had originally and lift the handle be straighter. The blade portion looks good now, except that piece sticking down from the ricasso. It should end even with the blade edge.

I would set the other two aside.

maybe the third time is the charm here.

Yes, the one to the left is good. I would suggest that when doing the final sanding after HT you slightly round the finger groove onto the ricasso bottom. This will get rid of any sharp corner. The corners at the choil are fine left sharp.

Looks similar to my 2nd Amendment. I have made TONS of them over the years. Very popular.

I like the mini cleaver, though i might make the handle a bit straighter. i also like the one on the left in your original photo, but if it's intended to be a hunting knife i don't know anything about them.
All of them look good as learning projects. Design and ergonomics is hard to learn, so they look like a good start.

I can't understand why people love mini cleavers.
What kind of handle material will you be using?
In all honesty I'm not sure how much I like them either. I just wanted to try drawing one out. As far as handle material, I'm definitely using wood. I'm just not sure what kind yet.

I did a few what I call Mini/Pocket Cleavers. They worked out to be great working utility knives. They wanted something that was more of a fancy box cutter to carry around at their restaurant that he didn't worry about having in his hands in the tight confines of a restaurant.

What kinds of woods do you have for handles there?
The Damascus is Silverback buckeye burl and the other is Red Mallee burl. Buckeye is a great wood to work with as long as its stabilized. its like balsa wood if its not.. one slip on the grinder and half your handle is gone.

Since the mini clever seems to be so dividing I went ahead and redesigned it as well. Maybe it's not as much a cleaver as a reverse tanto, but I'm definitely more happy with it.

I figured I should go ahead and update this thread with how the knife is going. I finally had time yesterday to start roughing it out. It's certainly far from finished though.

I never was a fan of those pointed butts ... except on EMT and rescue knives as glass breakers. I can't see any other reason for a point on the wrong end of a knife.
Otherwise, it looks very good.
