I find myself spending more and more time on this forum, and becoming quite
facinated with custom ,forged blades.i have commissioned my first custom bowie(from Matt Roberts) just recently and i am very exited about this new direction my knife interest is going.
I wanted to introduce myself and thank everybody on this forum for sharing
the pictures, dialogue and passion and spreading the "bug".
Marc

I recently purchased a bowie made by John E. Tilton J.S.,i have been looking for more info on the maker without much luck.any help would be appreciated
as well as pictures of his work.
I am including some pictures of this piece, blade is 8"of forged 5160,o/a is 13"
i was told the handle is maple,it looks like it could be walnut to me.
I am also looking for info.on another maker :Mike Johnson
I apologize for the poor quality of my pictures.
thanks all.
Marc

You've picked yourself a maker that will produce a great knife for you.

The purchasing of custom bowies can become quite habit forming.

custom bowie's can be quite a problem . every time you find a perfect knife you find another and then an other and it just keeps going. Congrats

Hi Marc,

Matt is one of the real good guys and he will make you a fine knife.

I'm not familiar with John Tilton, so I can't help you there.

I have only seen one knife by Mike Johnson in person - a bowie that was well made and nicely finished. I have seen more of his work in photos on the 'net over the years and like what I have seen. I believe Les Robertson carries his work, so he would likely be a good source of info.

Marc,
Very nice Tilton bowie.
Some of the long grain in the handle looks like walnut,I think it's curly maple.

I have to very much agree with Roger about Matt, have 4 of his true customs.
And a DevilFish Model 2 from his midtech line coming this week.

Happy Hunting. :)

Doug

Thanks gents!

Here are a couple QUICK shots of the knife Marc and I are working on.

9.375"x2.25"x.350".

Marc, welcome to the world of forged Bowies.
As evident by your post you are wisely doing research and that research has paid off in your selection of a fine maker and individual for your first commissioned piece.

I too have a few knives by Matt, I have a hunter and a bowie ordered by him and another bowie picked up secondary. I have used them all and really like his work. My avatar is of the first knife he made for me and one of my favorite big bowies.

Thanks everybody for the welcome and the informations,i just wanted to add that
Matt is been great to work with(funny way to say this as he is doing all the work!)
and i am looking forward to get this bowie.
Marc

Marc,
I have little doubt you'll dig it,
when I saw Matt's pics I didn't think the blade was that long till I looked again at the guard and the specs on blade width.
And thickness.
