I just got emailed a press release from Benchmade that they got a new director of manufacturing. (The release doesn't yet appear on their website, so I copy it below.) Does anybody have info about or insight into the workings of Benchmade to know whether this was in response to something going on within the company, what effect if any this should have on the product, etc? Could be just the usual successor to somebody else retiring or moving on, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

October 23, 2009, Oregon City, Ore.--Benchmade Knife Company is proud to announce Dave Winterling as the new Director of Manufacturing. He will be responsible for all manufacturing operations at the Oregon City plant.
Mr. Winterling brings twenty-four years of manufacturing and metal-working experience to Benchmade. For the past 10 years, he was the Director of Manufacturing at The Stanley Works plant in Milwaukie, Oregon. Prior to that, he spent fourteen years with Kennametal/ Greenfield Industries in various positions including Director of Operations, Plant Manager, Materials Manager, and Engineering Manager. Mr. Winterling was also a Technical Services Engineer for the Timken Company.

"I look forward to focusing on Benchmade's manufacturing efforts to achieve success in lean manufacturing concepts," says Mr. Winterling. "I am excited to continue the development of world-class manufacturing at Benchmade."

"Dave comes to Benchmade with substantial global manufacturing experience," comments Greg Mooney, President of Benchmade. "I am confident his leadership and knowledge of the industry will help Benchmade's continued growth and development."

Mr. Winterling graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

He seems like a professional manager that specializes in " lean manufacturing concepts". Not necesessarily a knife guy. I have no idea if they already use that method or not. Good luck to Mr. Winterling and Benchmade.

It seems like he could do worse for employment if you ask me.
