Even though the balisong is not exactly new to me, I haven't been taking it seriously for a long time.
My first impressions of balisong were imported from movies. It took some time before I could get rid of the notion that the balisong is a "nasty" weapon.
Later as I found out more about this special blade, I began to learn to appreciate its design and its functionality and practicality.
Still, I must admit there are lots of non-knife people who have a pre-conceived notion that any person seen carrying a balisong is probably an undesirable character.
I am basically a folder guy but since I am a collector of knives, I confess I have a couple of balisongs in my drawer.
What I want to know is: Is it impractical to carry a balisong strictly for utility purposes? Or is it more practical to carry a folder?
The clickity-clackaty sound of an opening and closing balisong tends to scare the wits out of some people. So as a normal law-abiding citizen, I am very aware of this sound effect on normal folks.
Is there a silent mode on this Filipino knife? As you may have guessed by now that I am very much a novice as far as balisongs are concerned.
I do admire the balisong and the people who can seem to make it come alive in their hands.
Another question: If I were to buy one VERY GOOD Balisong, which one would that be?
A friend of mine recommended the Benchmade 42. It seems to have a very good reputation. What are some of the really good ones?

Make Love your strongest weapon. Compassion your shield and forgiveness your armour.

I can (and I'm sure most people here) can open a bali very quitely. I also carry a more conventional folder in case I'm around sheeple. But yes the fact that the lock will never give out on you during use is probably the best reason to choose a bali over a conventioal folder. It's the closest you can get to a fixed blade once it's open. Not to mention if you do carry a bali all the time you'll be garunteed to have something to play with when it gets boring.

Sheeple are people who freak out when they see a knife, they are the unlearned people of the world. The 42 is the best balisong that is in production right now, all the rest of the balisongs that you find (cheapies) will (98% of the time) have weak pins and will break. The 42 is the only one out there right now that won't break, fail, or fall apart on you.

Balisongman, clearly that is the 1st BM you've ever owned .They have the worst quality control out there so don't be SURPRISED if the worst happens ?

Right they are much worse than a jaguar brand knife, and since I'm so generous I'll trade any benchmade for a jag so the unlucky benchmade owner doesn't have to deal with the terrible quality.

MYKL, BalisongMan,ChungSan,
Thanks for the tips, guys.
Jaguar brand? Never heard of that. Is that any good? Someone said it was worse than lousy. Surely that can't be entirely true.

Golok, I was only kidding Benchmade is the best there is, Jaguars aren't total junk they just need better pins.
