Over the past 12 months I've had to put down both my dogs. It was a very painful time. A good friend of mine trains and owns and competes with hunting dogs (English Pointers and Setters). We were chatting and he mentioned he was looking for a good home for his 5 year old English Pointer bitch who was a great dog, but had blown out her ACL and after the surgery just wasn't able to hunt\compete at a high level.

We brought Kona home yesterday (I don't have pics yet). The cat, who has had run of the house the last few months, is mad!

Kona is a little sweetheart. She is so small; my other guys have ranged from 85-125 pounds, so a little 50 pound pointer seems like a puppy to me. My only concern is that she is more active than my other dogs so I hope I can exercise her enough.

Congrats on the new member of your family. She will make a great companion. We have a German Shorthair Pointer and she is one of the best all-around dogs we have ever had; even though she doesn't believe she's a dog.

Our lab had the TPLO surgery several years ago. Recovery was fast and her knee's been trouble-free ever since. I hope your new Pointer has a long and luxurious life with you; seems like she deserves it.

Well, you just may have to take your new girl on more walks. It would be good for both of you! Thank you for taking her. She'll thank you the rest of her life.

Woo Hoo! Way to go on welcoming Kona to your family. You will find a way to keep her exercised. Is there a dog park near you? Or a regular park that allows dogs? I don't know anything about this particular breed, so I don't know what they like to do.

I wonder if Kona would enjoy frisbee? Or at least a good game of fetch. If she will fetch, you could get one of those items that helps you get the ball thrown further, so she would have more of a challenge.

Or, if you do have a park with a large open area, like a soccer field or baseball/softball field, maybe you and another family member or friend could get far apart and call her to you, and each time she gets there, she gets a very, VERY, tastey morsel (small piece of hotdog, cooked chicken, cheese cube, etc.) She would sure run back and forth for a tastey treat!

Good luck and keep us updated on Kona's progress.

I have a few acres of lawn, so there is plenty of running for her. She doesn't fetch. I tossed a ball, she ran away from it. I tossed a stick, she looked at me. Oh, well. She is doing pretty well. She basically runs nonstop for about 10-15 minutes each morning and night.
