It is no secret I am singularly very fond of the Alpha series of Buck knives, the latest acquisition the model 271 folder with Bos heat treated S30V blade. What a beautiful knife of exceptional craft and design at an incredibly reasonable price. Gotta love the unique clamshell leather sheath that fits unobtrusively well on the belt. The Alpha Hunter and Dorado blades are truly works of art that are a cut above the average knife at a price that cannot be beat. Buck earns an A++ on this one.

And, they are undoubtedly two of the smoothest operating Bucks on the market.

I guess I'll have to get some of the new S30V models now.

Thank you kindly for the reminder sevensix. I'd shopped this new S30V folder at the show on Sunday but no joy then. Ordered online, where there is a vastly superior array of new folders, this morning. This thread needs photos.

The folding Alpha Hunters and Alpha Dorados are my favorite knives of all time. Now that I hear of an S30V model... ;)

They're kinda overlooked, by many seeing as how they don't have a pocket clip, which is considered an absolute necessity to some. I for one think the belt sheath is a sensible alternative, seeing as it helps free up pocket space, even at that I never did really warm up to my Dorado, but should give it another try.

I can't stand a pocket clip on a knife. Thus, I often carry mine in a sheath. DM

I am coming to that conclusion as well, David. I have/had a perfectly good pair of jeans that my Emersons just obliterated. I switched back to my Bucks and haven't looked back.

The 271 arrived. Notice the 2013 date symbol on the tang.

Like the sheath, mine is nylon.

The leather sheath smells just like a new pair of shoes and no tag showing country of origin. The wood scales are elegant, beautiful and rich.

Thank you kindly edbeau.

Specs: 4.32 oz (knife only), 6.5 inches & a bit overall open and sheath weighs in @ 1.28 ounces. Small, light and substantial. The liner lock is BACK!. Nicely anatomical grippage. The flat part of the heal of the blade lets you extend your thumb way out onto the blade's top for fine control. You might just be able to put a small round hole into a cigar with this folder. This knife is without flaw. The edge shouts "cut something now!" A sheath knife I will carry in its sheath on my belt.

Beautiful pics of a very handsome model oregon! That sure is a nice looking sheath, I am very tempted by this knife.

Duane,

There is a whole system already set up for getting stuff that tempts you. You press a button and, plus $71, it rolls right to your door!

Everyone should enjoy a Buck sometime before they croak:

Thank you. My pleasure. My straight man. :)

I applaud your discipline for not having used your discount already.

Off topic: Testing a Jawbone Up for the next few weeks, for use with an Ipad. Gotta drop a few lbs. and wonder if this might help with the calorie burn part of the equation.

Y'all have some fine comments about the Dorado blade. Thus far I am pleased with mine as EDC. The only "mod" I made with my 271 was to hone the already razor sharp blade with progressively finer diamond stones to a Danger Sharp edge. I found the S30V to be relatively easy to sharpen, easier than my 154CM blades, so it should be user friendly for most folks. On an aside, like oregon's knife, mine is also dated 1-31-13 which is significant for me -- date of spine surgery #6. I recovered much better and faster with Buck's 271in hand. Enjoy your 271s!
