OK, now that I've made the mistake in perusing Dan Koster's website I have a new vision for a "must-have" khukri variation. I'd just love to see an eighteen to twenty inch Gelbu Special with a Chiwura style handle modified to Dan's sub-hilt fighter style. Of course I'd personally prefer it with polished steel bolster, heelcap and subhilt (while I"m dreaming make that from nickle silver damascus blanks...) and a blued satin finish blade.

Wouldn't that just be the absolute nuts? I wonder if the kamis would bang out just a blade without handle or bolster for that kind of project?

You should just grab the next GS blem that comes up and get Dan to modify it :) You CAN make a stick tang into a "full tang" - a lot of Bowies are done i that fashion, the tang is mortised into nickel silver or stainless, so the oils from your hand have less chance of causing rust.

It would be a nice nifty fighter. A Malla would work too.
I stupidly sold my 21" GS.

That was my plan, now you have given it away to everyone!!!

Actually I didn't know about the trick with the mortising of the tang. That is a great one and I will have to check it out. Now does anyone have a GS with a badly cracked handle they are willing to part with cheap or to trade?

Yes, a mortised tang would work. This is how it works. You take a bar of steel, trace the tang onto it. Cut that part out. Weld the two together. Grind the welds flush. Shape the tang and add your handle. The handle is then pinned to both the tang and the mortised part. As long as you use a tough enough wood, it should stand up to khukuri-type use.

The other stuff in your request list is not a problem....nice extras.
