I had a delivery the other day from harbor freight. It was my drill press's.
Man ---- these are a lot nicer than the enco I bought last time. They were 59.00 delivered.
I indicated and pinned the tables. They were within .002 out of the box. The enco was .008.

They run smother also.

A great buy!!!!!

Darrel, can you suggest a good but economical dial indicator for a drill press or mill??

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

I have a brown and sharp I have had for 25 years . I would look for an mid price range model that has several stems included . This will allow you to do many functions. I like the type that you can place the clamp on the top or end with swivels.
As for 1 inch dial indicators, I was lucky at a rockwell auction. I bought 3 federals.

Hi Darrel!
I like those little benchtops from Harbor Freight also...have one I dedicated just for leatherwork...and sometimes they are as cheap as $44.95!

Don't you know you have to buy the Delta 16.5" variable speed or you're just not cool?

Actually, at about $900, you could buy a whole fleet of those little guys and have pocket change left over.

I can set up a drill size in each and leave it for a while for a change.

Not Darrel, but...

I'm still working on my 2nd knife, but I've done a LOT of shop work - You BEST bet for an inexpensive indicator? Buy a used one! A few years back, my wife said, "Spend your birthday money on some tools". I watched the local trade a paper until I saw an and for "Machinist's tools", went over and bought the whole tool box - A Kennedy box, 5 or 6 mikes, 2 surface gages, 2 Starret Test indicators, some tooling, and a BUNCH of other stuff that I can't thing of right now - Basically, the guy had retired, and decided to sell off one of his boxes.

We spent an hour talking, with him showing me some neat shop tricks (remember, I'm NOT a pro), and I walked out with the whole thing for $200

Good point on the used tools. Pawn shops are full of them!

YA Tim ..
Get tired of changing bits
