Hi all,

I'm looking for a new EDC to do basic tasks. A new outdoor store in town is selling CRKT M18-02's for $33. I've done the requisite searching here and found that this knife received mostly positive comments. Does this sound like a good buy or should I spend a little more for something like a Delica 4 or Endura 4? Thanks in advance.

I owned both a delica 4 and an Endura 4 for a few months, then I traded them. I loved the VG-10, but the knives were just not doing it for me. Everyone raves them, and they were great knives, but I just wasn't impressed (blade play, and they didn't really fit my hands were the big problems). I'd say go with the M18, if your not impressed, get an Endura, it may just be your milk and cookies.

CRKT appears to continually change the steel it uses in its blades, without notice.

If the M-18 you're looking at for $33.00 has a blade made of AUS 8 steel, and it's made in Taiwan, then it's a solid knife for the money.
IMO.

I personally would rather have a Spyderco, but some like the CRKT design better. Some people like the action of a liner lock better than the Spyderco's back lock.

Anyway, if the M-18 blade is made of AUS 4, or 420J, I'd definitely take a pass on it. Same if it's made in China (rather than Taiwan).

The M18 would be a good choice. I have personally had nothing but positive experiences with CRKT. Their make good, hard-working knives, and the customer service and warranty are simply outstanding. I never hesitate to recommend CRKT to others.

Ok here's my take...

Firstly, I'm not familiar with the M18, but if it's anything like their M16/M21 (which they're mainly known for) it may be a good choice.

Yeah Spyderco and Benchmade are better knives.
But CRKT has some attractive features that are hard to find in other folders, and may deserve a long, hard look.
1. I have large hands -- and the M16/M21 has a nice, big, very substantial handle.
2. Also with the 'Carson Flipper,' they are one of the very few folding knives that have an actual guard.

Personally, I think if you want these two features this is a great choice. If you want to spend 2-3x as much there's also the Spyderco Manix and Chinook, and the Benchmade Ruckus and Skirmish...

Other than that CRKT is just average. The steel is decent/good (aus8 that is) , the lock is .... well ok I guess.

Nothing wrong with aus8 , I have not personally held an M18 but I own several other CRKT knives and all are excellent blades , especially for the price.
Lately though I've had a lust for Spyderco (just not the cash to back it up :P).

I recently picked up an M21 and was suprised by the fit and finish. I was hesitent in buying it because of some posts I've read about the quality of CRKT knives. It's made in Tawain and has an AUS 8 blade, flips open nice and smooth and locks up tight. I use it for my beater knife right now.
