Ok, I think I've narrowed my want to buy list down to 5, unless someone has a better idea. For reference, I'm going to be EDCing it but it will also see some hard use sometimes and I'm most concerned with the strength of the tip of the knife as I am prone to breaking them.

1. HK14255 - I love the shape, looks, blade thickness of this knife, only thing is, I'm not convinced 154CM is strong enough. Its also expensive

2. BM Griptilian from Cabelas in D2 - its finally in stock and I think that D2 will be tough enough for me, but am still not sure. Its cheaper which is a plus

3. Buck/Strider 880 - ats-34 with titanium liners and a thick blade...should be a tank. Its a little big, and the mini is too small. Does anyone know if the 882 has the titanium liners as well? I like the looks of that one a little more.

4. BM 710 - hear alot about this knife, everyone says its incredible and I think it would be a good knife, but the blade is a little thin and I don't know how tough the tip will be.

5. Emerson Mini-Commander - love the blade shape, handle contours. I'm a little concerned with some comments of blade play and I experienced a little of this when I handled the knife. but the big thick blade seems like a beast.

Which one should I get? I handled them all at blade show and I liked the feel and action of all the benchmades, but the Strider felt like a tank, sturdy and their warranty is good too (personal experience). Will any of these companies replace a blade with a broken tip? I know all of the warranties say the wont, but buck replaced mine. Personal experience with this?

Thanks for your help in advance!

The only one I own from those is the 710. Excellent knife definitely one of my all time favorites. Definately in my Top 4. The blade isn't too fragile and the tip should hold up well. It definitely is not a needle sharp tip. The spyderco military and 710 rank up there with some of the best designed knives I have handled for sure though.

Of those I would choose the 710. I have heard the HK 14205 is REALLY NICE! You might want to check one of those out. THANKS! Kevin:) :) :)

I would have to agree, the 710 would be my 1st choice , followed neck and neck between the HK & the Emerson.

I bought the Mini Comm and if I'd have known the full sized Commander was only a little larger , I would have gotten that one instead.

However if cost is a factor, the full sized grip is an excellent choice too.

I've included a picture of my 710 and full sized grip. I'll try to get a shot with my Mini Comm. BTW my mini has no play and it locks up solid. It had a slightly off-centered blade which I was able to correct myself.

i don't think there is enough of a difference between 154CM and ATS-34 to warrant worrying about the difference in toughness

i think the 710 is going to be tougher than the Grip, the handle/scales of the Grip will flex in your hand, the 710 is pretty solid

i think D2 is harder and 154CM/ATS-34 are tougher, if i remember, but i think hey are all kinda close if i remember right

i don't know much about the Emersons, but i'm not too thrilled with the Buck/Strider folders, part of that is my general dislike of liner locks too though. that and the only one i have messed with had a lot of vertical blade play

i'd probably suggest the H&K if you like the shape(it's made by Benchmade, right?) or the 710. you could probably still find a 154CM version if you wanted

I'm most concerned with the strength of the tip of the knife as I am prone to breaking them.

The 710 is an excellent knife -- one of my all-time favortites. However, I'm going to have to qualify my answer because I don't know what you've been doing to break the tips off your knives.

If you're doing it by prying, don't get the 710 unless you're willing to stop prying -- the tip is fairly fine. If it is prying, then I suggest you stop doing it with a knife and get a small prybar or an Atwood Prybaby. In my opinion, you sacrifice other qualities -- mainly cutting and piercing ability -- to get a knife so thick that you can use it to pry.

If you're breaking tips by dropping your knives, I suggest that you start using a lanyard.

710 is very nice i edc it . Just orderd a 14255sbt for edc. Will see how it holds up....

I'd take the Griptilian. Better handle design and no recurve. Tougher than nails and will keep up with or surpass the other other knives in this list.

If you're concerned about 154CM, then you won't want the Buck in ATS-34. They're pretty much the same steel.

Personally I think the 710 would be a great choice if prying is a must. If you're hell-bent on prying with your knife hard, the buck and HK seem like they would fit the bill the best. I believe they have the thickest tips. I also don't think that the differences in steels in this case really matters much for prying. Just my opinion.

I wouldn't pry with the 710, no way. .120 thick, and a hollow ground saber blade with a false edge?? Any of those other choices would be far better for prying. For what you want, I would think the 880 at .187 thick is the best choice by far. Especially if you went with the tanto one.

710! Yeah, what are you doing to your tips?! and why weren't we invited to the claim bakes!!!
