Okay I asked him what his dream knife is and in his words it should be a sub 3" bladed knife with assisted opening, premium steel (VG10,154CM,S30V,etc.)
With very low profile carry, and a grippy handle surface.
 (wouldnt we all?)
I immediately thought of a Spyderco Meerkat, but no one has them in stock.
It'll be his first nice EDC and I want it to be pretty memorable ,something he'll have for years. Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks :)

Problem solved :D I found a Meerkat on Evil Bay for 70$ shipped :foot:
Probably should of checked b4 posting but I was kinda freaking out lol.

Mini-stryker ? Decently grippy, AO and D2 tool steel?

It's a good gift idea, I gave my brother a UT-X85 NIB and he about **** himself. That was his dream knife, well a carry size OTF. Probably the best gift he's ever gotten. Wasn't even his birthday. Randomly giving knives to people is win.

I'd suggest anything from Kershaw.
If assisted opening isn't a dealbreaker, try a Spyderco Caly 3.

if he doesnt mind it not being assisted, then id suggest the benchmade mini-griptilian. the axis lock is great and it opens just as fast and smoothly as an assisted opener.

however, that microtech UT X-85 is pretty awesome too

How about the G10 S30V Leek? Sounds like that would meet all the criteria.

I second this choice on the griptilian. If you want to get something smaller and less money I also have a buck dorato in 154cm and rosewood handles that is terrific and very sharp. It is very light weight, cool swedge spear point, tight lockup and comes with a lifetime warranty. Also comes with a little leather sheath if wants to carry it on his belt but is light enough for the pocket. I got one for my son and he loves it. Another inexpensive EDC is I am playing with is the Cold Steel Rajah III. This thing really grows on you the more you use it. The handle is great and Tri-ad lock is fantastic. The blade steel is not my favorite (AUS8) but it works really well, is very sharp and not hard to sharpen. This last point is important. Part of carrying an EDC is taking care of it. Using a spyderco sharpmaker will make short work of it. For less than $100 you can get him a Sharpmaker and a dorato or Rajah III. Just another way to go..

What the OP described, to my way of thinking, is a Kershaw SG2 Blur or perhaps the S30V version.

I disagree with the Grip. They are anything but thin. Great knives, but rather bulky IMO. I like the G-10 Leek, or maybe a G-10 Spyderco Delica.
