Howdy folks.
I bought this little gem about two weeks ago at the local Army surplus store.
1.jpg

14 inches wide - 8 inches high and 5 inches deep. Coyote Brown cordura , very heavy duty sewn :) It is pretty darn configurable as far as carry methods , on the back there are several velcro molle straps , it has a 'purse' type handle that when not in use can hook around back of the bag , out of the way. On either end there are d rings that you can attatch the included large strap , this way it can be worn over your shoulder or as a belt/fanny pack style.
4 main compartments , two on either side , one in the front and the main compartment in the middle , the main and front both have inner pockets for various items. The zippers seem heavy duty and quality with paracord ties for the pullers. On either end of it and in the front there are additional loops for want of a better word , I use the two biggest for a writing pen and a Gerber Sonic , both of which fit perfectly. I also keep my watch (Timex Expidition) attatched to one of the front loops.

There is plenty of room to store what I use when I travel for work plus some backup goodies. Included in my inventory but not pictured are a bottle of alcohol hand cleaner , large Bic lighter , small can of Axe :p , MP3 player , small first aid kit and usually a small bag of nuts or candy bar. :D

contents , nothing too fancy but useful to me- left to right CRKT Ryan PlanB, Buck sharpening rod , bottle for antacid (blue and white) , smokes , Gerber Clutch , LED modded Mag , checkbook , Husky mini screwdriver , permanent marker , meds and some paracord.

The contents could easily be swapped to make this into a nifty little B.O.B , while it is a bit tactical looking it also sort of looks "hiking innocent" enough to not stand out too awful much in the crowd but still look cool and be quite functional.
Best of all was I paid 14$ for it new , I dont know where it is made since it has not a sinlge indentifying tag on it but I looked it over well before I bought it , it is very heavily stitched and seems quite rugged , they had them in Black and Olive Drab as well.
Anyways just wanted to share this with you folks.

Later , Todd

wow they do share some similarities lol, i bet he paid a lot less for his vs the maxpedition..............

i wouldnt mind having a surplus one like that myself FWIW.

Whoa.... so the one I have is a Mexpedition copy !? Double U Tee F..
Looks like the only thing they did different was the zipper color...
Geez , I thought only certain things got counterfeited like knives and money.
Well , I guess Maxpedition can console themselves with the old "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" line , eh ?
:o

edit - darnit , now I want the real deal !

Yeah, Maxpedition make nice gear. (Why d'ya think I recognised it :) - I have one in Black).

The more minutes pass the more I'm irritated by this , why in the heck couldnt they have made it even just a little different ?
I mean really , there is not a whole lot of honor in a total copy , I can see using some of the ideas but an exact copy....
:grumpy:

Who copied whom? Have you seen the latest Maxpedition tactical attaches? They came out with them right after they stopped making a beefed-up Bailout Bag for County Comm.

I agree... that tactical bag looks a lot like the BOB from County Comm. I have some and love my Maxpedition products, but they sure are expensive.

I have been looking around for a good BOB backpack, the Falcon fits the bill, but it is over 100.00. I can get an almost identical pack from cheeperthandirt for less than 30.00... tough choice. If one were made in the USA, there would be no question, but neither is. So who gets the money, the "name" brand or the copycat.

Well If I read your guys's replies right , Mexpedition didnt make this style originally ? If that's the case I'm a little relieved.
I mean dont get me wrong , I'm still going to keep and use this bag , I just thought I was buying a somewhat original idea and dont care too much for counterfeit items.

Its a game of give and take. If Maxpedition did design the Proteus 1st, well they got the give on this one, but if they took the design on the BOB from County Comm, well that is a take in my opinion.

There are only so many original ideas in this world at any given point in time and what it really boils down to is marketing and copyright lawyers.

I was just looking at some duffels, with and without end pockets. The Maxpedition proteus and your pack have the same kind of pockets, but the duffels are barrel-shaped. They are all simple patterns using standard ideas.

I don't even know that Max stole the idea from County Comm. Their bags are different, larger, more expensive, and they did make a County Comm BOB for a while. It may all be by agreement. CC just came out with a next generation bag, including in new colors, so they can't be doing too badly, either.

Exactly.

Check out Spec-Ops. They may have something for you and they are made in the US. www.specopsbrand.com

Got one - used it in a bosnia bag, which needed an organizer. Spec ops makes good stuff, the pack rat can really get stuffed with gear and still be small. The yellow rip stop inside allows great visibility in the dark when your fishing around.

Oh, the Bosnia bag? Bought mine surplus in Springfield, MO and later discovered its a copy of the Blackhawk 3 day bag.

What comes around goes around - there are about 4 different 3 day bags on the market now if my latest Cav Store catalog is accurate.

for months, now. Mine's the olive drab, though. Had no idea there was a Maxpedition exactly like it till just now. Saw it at the local surplus store and picked it up. I've picked up a few surplus bags over the years and have always been pretty happy with them. Mine has a tag inside that says "Mil Spec plus" but no mention of where it was made. I think I paid more than $14 but I still count it as a good value. Whenever this thing finally dies I'll have to check out Maxpedition.

Hmm I'll have to reinspect mine , I didnt see a tag surprisingly.
Gotta admit though it is built well and the materials seem quality , just bums me out it is a copy.

I guess you would never buy a Kimber then. Just because its a "copy" doesn't disqualify it for its own use. It could actualy be better construction. It is also posssible it was made in the same factory as the maxpedition, just not branded, that is common place.

I own an Astra A100 , often called poor mans Sig after which it is modeled and now that I think about it ,you are right.
Thanks fpr putting a different perspective on this :D
