I'm looking to pick up a new EDC (hoo rah!) I think I just found someone to put carbon fiber on my Benchmade 800 AFCK, which has been in pocket for a long time. I'm looking for something in the $125- 175 range. I love the hole on my AFCK, but I just went to Smoky Mtn. Knife Works and I'm not too interested in the Spydercos (military and Police, ) because the action is not very smooth. I am looking for a 3 3/4- 4 in. blade, easy opening, and (most importantly) dependable. I have been looking and I have found the ZT's (the 300, I believe), and 2 different Benchmade models, the Subrosa 790 and the McHenery&Williams 710. Do you guys have any suggestions or opinions. I would also like something that has a combo edge. There are so many out there. Oh, has anyone had expierience with the TOPS/ Fox knives? They are on sale at SMKW!

If you'd consider a blade length of 3.25", there's no need to pay so much... 'smooth & sturdy' can be had for around $30. Ontario RAT-1.

My 806 and 710 both get a lot of pocket time. If we're not going for Spyderco (and I wish you'd reconsider; my PM2 opens like walking on oiled glass), then I vote for the 710. Svelte but stout as can be and that smidgen of recurve grabs pretty well during a cut.

As allyourblood said, you really should reconsider Spyderco. For the 40 + years I've been collecting I have bought only one of two Spyderco knives, until the newly passed year. I now have five of them and ALL have silky smooth opening. The Spyderco Vallotton Sub-Hilt folder is my favorite of the five, and the cost is ~$200, so only $25 over your top limit. It opens as smooth as any of the knives I have, that include's the two John W. Smith SD-3's I have, and JWS makes as fine a folder as you will find!

Don't know how you feel about the weight of the knife though, and the Vallotton is 6 ounces, which to me just makes it feel all that much better. Of course if you are considering the ZT0300 series, then you must not mind the weight! The ZT0200 is another one to look at.

The two BM's you have mentioned are very nice with the 710 being an iconic knife for Benchmade. I haven't had the Subrosa because of it's ligh weight, but it does look nice. Another one to consider would be the newly released BM 275 Adamas.

I know that Spyderco used to make great knives... I have owned more than one... It's just that when I last handled one (the military) it took me 2 tries to flip it open. It was like that with the others also. I guess with some time it could work more freely. Ok, so I will have to choose between the Benchmade 710, Benchmade 790, ZT 200, ZT300, and the Spyderco Military... It seems like the possibilities are growing

The Spyderco Military in all titanium is nice. It is the only Military I've ever owned.

But of that list, it would have to be the ZT0200!

It's going to be a tough nut to beat a 710 without dropping another $100.00. I've had Benchmades since my 1st production run Small Reflex but I've never held another knife that's even in the ballpark as my 710 (& I'm talking about any maker)! I've recently purchased the entire Spyderco Sage series & I would happily trade the whole lot for one Benchmade 710. I would even trade my model 25 Sebenza for the feel & sound of a well cared for 710!

Go find & handle one & you will understand what I mean when you first open it.

ZT 0200 is a great knife. It's a big bad beast. 0300s are nice too but IMO you get a lot more bang for your buck with the 0200.

I love that ashtray! I don't smoke anymore (quit last Christmas), but if I did...
Great knife too.

Thanks! I recently gave the ashtray (never used; just for display) to a buddy as a bit of rock 'n roll swag for his collection. As much as I dig the Ramones, he is a Ramones super-freak... :D

Wow, this thread is three years old. Glad I gave sound advice back then... I still like my RAT-1!:D
