Hello all!
I recently purchased a spyderco delica 4ffg after a long debate between the delica and a mini griptilian.

My knife arrived today and being a lefty the first think I went to do was switch the clip to left hand carry and noticed that one of the screws was already stripped. Because of this I cannot switch the clip. On top of the clip problems the pivot is very tight and is not smooth what so ever.

I was wondering if I just got unlucky and got a dud and should return it for a new one? Or if I should get my money back and get either a Benchmade mini grip or a 940?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Send it back to the dealer/store you bought it from.

Don't even leave a fingerprint. Get it back to them NOW, with a short note to explain.
It happens.

Send it back for an exchange. I have owned probably 15-20 Delicas and Enduras, and I have never had the problems you are describing.

Delicas (and all quality Lockbacks) have strong lock-up, but are not smoothest/fastest/effortless to deploy. Its just physics. Liner/Frame locks or Axis/Ball Bearing Locks will deploy much smoother, faster and with minimal effort. You can adjust the pivot screw on your Delica but it may result in some blade play so you have to find the perfect middle-ground. I delpoy my delica fine but it requires a dedicated wrist action. My Mini grip (and many others) I can deploy with just a flick of my thumb with no forward wrist motion.

Being a lefty myself I know the need to put the pocket clip on the correct side.

That sucks that the screw was stripped.

But I'm curious. What exactly was stripped? The screw head? The screw threads or the threads in the knife knife's liner?

Hope it works out and you get it fixed soon.

edit to add

The reason I ask is, if it's the screw threads or liner theses that are stripped, you may still be able to get the clip off.

If that's the case, take the other two screws out. Use something very thin, like a utility knife blade - between the knife scale and the clip and pry up as you turn. The screw may catch and back itself out. If it's the screw threads that stripped - don't reuse that screw. If it was the liner threads you can probably still reuse that screw. I recommend blue loc tite on clip screws.

Or send it back if you're not comfortable doing that.

I would send it back and go for the 940. I have ONE endura 4 and I do Not plan on purchasing any others, mine has catastrophic lock back failure that I have to look into getting repaired/replaced... My only other spyderco is a manix 2 lw s110v.

I loved my 940, sold it to purchase a benchmade 710-1401. I would buy a new 940 or a 940-01 in a heartbeat.

As others have said, swap it out with the dealer. It shouldn't have come with stripped screws. The pivots on my Spyderco FRN lockbacks (Delica, Endura, Stretch, Dragonfly) were a bit tight at first, but after a little bit of wearing in, it should smooth out nicely. I'd still give the Delica a chance. It was my favorite Spyderco for a long time and was only recently surpassed by the Caly3 (highly recommend that one too). The Benchmade Mini-Grip and 940 are both great knives too and definitely worth trying, but I wouldn't write off the Delica until you've had a chance to give it a fair go.
