I need a new EDC and don't know what to get with so many choices. Ive read many of these and just finally decided to post my own. So just a little detail about myself im 19, clean carpets/upholstry/tile/ac/air ducts; the job doesn't really demand a knife too much but I like carrying one. Of course with this job im in peoples houses around them and their family so id prefer it to not be too flashy or large. At the same time im just over 6ft tall and my hands are fairly large. Also, what type of blade would you normally have for your edc (serrated, partially serrated, etc?) Oh and price range id like to stay under $50 but am willing to go higher if necessary.

Can't go wrong with a spyderco delica 4 Ffg plain blade. Vg10 steel is good stuff. Smaller knife, different color options. Comfortable in the hand. Frn handles are tough and useful. I really like mine and will buy more. Good luck in your hunting, it is always fun!

Agreed, go with a delica or an endura depending on your size preference. I personally favor the plan edge, full flat ground versions. Both models can be had in various colors to suit your tastes. For a few more dollars the benchmade griptilian and mini grip are tremendous edc knives as well.

I'd vote for a Kershaw Needs Work, it's a great tough little folder plus the blade shape is great for utility tasks IMO... Plus, the handle is quite comfy considering how short it is.

I've always found the lock to slip/give a bit during harder tasks on all the enduras I've had; they're still a great knife though.

I'd recommend not serrated and don't get a fancy supersteel. I would also recommend getting a knife with an open back because it will stay cleaner/be easier to clean.

Spyderco Endura 4, Spyderco Native FRN, Kershaw Piston, Kershaw Knockout, or a Kershaw Blur. Some of these knives might be at or above $50, but they are all very good knives for under $100.

Don't go with a serrated edge, they cannot be sharpened. Stay with a non-serrated plain edge. I don't own a single combo-edge or serrated knife, I prefer a plain edge.

I'm also over 6ft tall, and, although I don't think I have huge hands, I find the Spyderco Delica to be a little on the small side.

If you want a larger folder that's under $50, you can't go wrong with the Ontario RAT-1. I wouldn't call it flashy looking, it's very utilitarian in my eyes, but but it does have a 3.6" blade, which some people might find "intimidating", and it not be legal where you live. However, if you can hold off purchasing for a little while, the Ontario RAT-2, which is basically a smaller RAT-1 will be available March 1:

Also, not to send you off in another direction, but have you considered going with a multi-tool or a Swiss Army Knife? In your line of work, having some other tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, or light-duty scraping/prying tools might be very useful.

Have you considered a multitool like a Swisstool or Leatherman. They are very handy to have as you might need a screwdriver for removing vents or might need to work on your equipment!

+1 delica/endura ffg. I'd recommend going to a knife shop and holding each to see how they feel to you, and take a look at a pic of how the clip looks in pocket. If you don't want a visible clip, put a lanyard and carry in pocket, or if you really don't want to offend, a traditional knife (I like the Case Med. stockman in CV/chesnut bone), I am about the same size and the case is small, but the delica is great. Maybe add do you want a one hand opener, and whether you need a blade to be under 3 inches because of your location, or any other preferences, but if you want a great knife, a delica (or endura) is hard to beat for the price, especially in FFG. The more you know about what you want, the closer you can get to finding the right knife for you, but finding a knife shop of anykind and holding some blades can't hurt, and might show you some features (i.e. flippers, A.O. etc..)that you have not considered..

I can't really improve on the excellent advice posted so far, other than to mention that the Spyderco Endura 4 is one of the best values out there.

Swiss Army Knives are widely acceptable for most people. You could get the tools you can use the most. They're not going to freak anyone out either. Carried a Swisschamp for years in peoples' homes without a comment, and always had every tool.

Don't go with a serrated edge, they cannot be sharpened.

False. With the right tools serrated edges are just as easy to sharpen ams plain edges. You could actually argue that they are even easier to sharpen because they are often chisel ground meaning you only have to sharpen one side and then knock the burr off.

I'd also recommend a Delica or, even better, an Endura Wave. It's discreet, will likely fit your hands better, is completely reliable for use/abuse and the wave makes drawing it extremely fast. The wave part of the blade is also large enough to make a decent bottle opener for crackin' a cold one after work.

How about the kershaw blur, cryo or there line of multi tools, funxion. Also does anyone own a knife with an emerson opener and how do you like it? and im considering spyderco manix or paramilitary2.

Well you could get the kershaws from keshawguy.com the manix from blades hq....the paras are a hard one...

I am well over 6' tall and have pretty large hands (can easily palm a basketball). I find the Delica more than large enough for EDC.
