I am looking to upgrade from my gerber EZ-out to a new edc, any suggestions? So far i have been looking at the BM-940 and BM-750, this is my frist post so i suppose that i should introduce myself as well, my name is brian and i am a student at carnegie mellon university, i live in new hampshire, and i am just starting my knife collection, so far i have a few gerber pocket knives (LST, Gatormate) a Leatherman, and a Cold Steel Carbon V kubun and SRK.

I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him.

I have owned both the 940 and the 750. After a day or two I decided I just didn't like the 750 and found it another home. It's a nice solid knife, but I didn't like the rough texturing or the feel of the action.

I still have my 940 and I carry it regularly. My preferences run to larger and wider blades (Sifu, Commander, Boa, ...). Despite that the 940 ends up in my pocket at least once or twice a week.

May I suggest the Benchmade 800 AFCK with round hole. Right now they are being phased out in favor of the redesigned hole which I do not like. I guess Benchmade will not have to pay Spyderco royalties since they will be using the redesigned hole on the latest release of the AFCK. I have seen them going for $65, and that is an excellent price for a good knife. My next knife will be the AFCK with axis lock, and I think it will be a knife that Bencmade will produce in the near future. Big D1

If you are looking for a new EDC, why not go over and get yourself a new EDC? Here is a link:

I got one and, if this don't beat all, it's my new EDC.

Sometimes I catch myself assuming that everybody knows their way around a pocket knife. Then I remember what the first three letters of "assume" are.

Between those two I would definitely go for the 940. The 750 is a tough knife but the 940 is a IMHO "better" daily carry for general use. I just got one and the axis lock is great! Also, I have shown the 940 to several KNON KNIFE KNUTS and they react MUCH better than when I pull out my LCC!! (You have GOT to get an LCC!) The 940 is a very "sheeple" friendly blade . . . really impressive and LIGHT!

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS . . .LET THE SHOPPING BEGIN!!

Out of the two, I would go for the 750! The Ti handles require a bit of use to break in the lock (its stiff otherwise) but it is a larger EDC while not being over heavy. Oh and it is a great knife. Make sure you get a good look at any BM before buying it though

I reccomend the SOG X-Ray Vision. It has the arc lock and cool blade. great solid feel!!

First I must say Welcome, Brian. I know what it's like when you are starting a new collection. Thinking of what knives to buy, what to collect, and what to use, etc. If you are upgrading your EDC, you need to think about what you are using the knife for. Here is a short list of my favorites for an EDC.

1 Benchmade
730(red/black)
732(black)
735(black/green) my EDC
710
940
AFCK 800 (and the mini 812)
690
550 Griptilian (awesome value!!!)
2 Microtech
LCC
SOCOM, and the Elite
3 Kershaw Boa
4 Camilius EDC 154cm
5 Cold Steel Recon
My suggestion is to find a shop near by, and try em all out. Good luck.

Hi Lizardking, Welcome to the forums. As you might probably have found out by now, everybody has their own preferred EDC. If you're lucky, some of these preferences might actually echo yours and you will believe that you have a clear indication of which one you should get. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. You really need to get hold of some of the knives you're thinking of buying and play with it and carry it for a while. Soon, you will be able to tell whether you like it or not as an EDC. Then if you don't like it, you have the choice of retiring it to the display shelf (keep the box if possible) or selling it.

Case in point: Emerson La Griffe. Didn't like wearing it around my neck and blade was, in my opinion, too short. Wore it for about a month, now relegated to special occasions like the beach, or when my dress pants pockets can't support anything heavier than my SAK Classic.

Just remember that all the knives which your fellow forumites like are quality items, so you probably won't go far wrong. But if they condemn a particular knife, take heed because no matter how you look at it, it would not be worth your money to buy.

For my personal opinion on the matter, I can't comment on the BMs because I've not held any before. My EDC will always have at least one of the following: SAK (usually for the tools rather than the blade, though it is a bonus. It will always be the locking variety.), SAK classic (tiny blade with scissors, for when sheeple are around. Always attached to my Infinity Tasklight), Spyderco Endura or Delica, SOG X-ray vision, Kershaw Ken Onion Boa, Emerson Commander (though it needs some work to increase lateral stiffness to my liking. Will do it once I figure out how best to solve the problem.)

Anyways, good hunting. Hope you find one you really like.

Hi LizardKing. You've had plenty of good knife recommendations. I do recommend that if you can you go to a brick and mortar, and check out the knives you're interested in. Then go buy it at a real price on the net.

Mainly wanted to say welcome, and tell you how much I like your quote. Sounds just like Twain. Royo threw a real scare into me when he said, "EMERSON". At first I thought he was attributing the quote to Ralph Waldo, but it doesn't sound anything like him.

Hope you stick around and enjoy yourself.

I always fee guilty going into a brick and motor store, looking at their merchandise, asking questions, with no intention of buying anything from them, since the internet often has better prices, i think that i would have to buy a knife from time to time, maybe start a SAK classic collection or something, Thanks for all the warm welcomes

Bugs
Sorry I threw a scare into but you assumed Ralph Waldo where i would assume when I would say Emerson in BF that everyone would know I was speaking of Ernest. Oh well that is what makes life interesting

Royo -- well, scare may not have been the best word, but it just came out. Meant that when something suddenly challenges my "knowledge" or understanding of something, I get real confused/anxious. Take medication for the latter, but maybe not enuff?

I believe that on any other thread in the forums I'd have followed you. But this one had such a great quote attributed to one of my favorite authors, which sounded like him. RW Emerson would never have written anything, even jokingly, about killing someone.

Probably only underlines my oddity.

Bugs Are you talking about the Mark Twain quote? I am not a quotable quotes kinda guy so I usually do not contest anyones knowledge on quotes becasue mine is pretty poor. Anyway who cares who said it as long as it is cool. Am I not correct my friend?
One of my favorites is from the original "Mad Max" Movie where goose lays down his bike and the guy in the car asks him what has hapened and Goose says,"I don't know man . I just got here myself." For some unknown reason I just find that hilarious...
