Hello,

Long time lurker, finally decided to join and post. I browsed the hundreds of pictures in the EDC threads and finally decided on a Kershaw OD-1 last year. For hunting I have a Buck Paklite (walmart model), a medium Buck Bucklite max and a MiniBuck. Sitting in the car is a 93mm Spyderco Rescue.

With that out of the way, I'm looking for a new EDC blade that's less of a "gentlemans" folder like the OD-1. As for requirements, I'm considering moving away from a liner lock to a lockback or some variation (axis lock, tri-ad lock,etc.). Another plus, is something other than a black knife and a "flipper" on the back spine of the blade.

Looking to spend around $50, used is fine.

Knives that have caught my attention:

Cold Steel American Lawman
Spyderco Delica
Kershaw Clash, Needs Work

CLIFFS:

+- $50
Folder
Non liner lock preferred
Non black handle
Blade "flipper" preferred
Assisted opening is ok
Thicker blade, made to be used if not abused a little
USA or Japan made

Thanks!

Of the ones you list I would recommend the Spyderco Delica. Spyderco has been my EDC for the better part of 15 years. For non-black I'm really partial to the Foliage Green.

American Lawman would be my choice. Never really like the Delica, even though I like a lot of Spyderco's knives. AL is tough, has a great lock, fits the hand well, and doesn't way much more than a Delica. Definitely more macho than it as well. Don't have any experience with a Kershaw Needs Work, so can't comment on it.

Thanks for all of the feedback!. I'm not stuck on any of the knives listed, just things that have peaked my interest. Open to any and all suggestions.

I keep wanting to try the Delica but I can't live with the (slight) vertical play inherent (or endemic) to the lockback design. Not a functional drawback but it makes me uneasy. I don't want my blade to wiggle when I am bearing down on it while cutting.

Benchmade Vex? I havent personally owned one but Ive held a couple and they seem as good as any knife in that price range.

The Vex is made in China though which is counter to the OP's desire. If that isn't a problem the Vex is nice for the price. I also really like the mini-ambush from the discontinued Red Line. Either is still pretty easy to find around your price mark.

The delica in any variation sounds like just what you need. It's a fantastic edc knife.

Also, by your suggestions take a look into the kershaw skyline

The Delicas and Enduras are great for the money the FFG blade is my favorite but many prefer the thicker Saber grind also they come in nifty colors.

Out of the ones you listed, the Spyderco is made in Japan, and the Needs Work is made in the USA. The Clash is made in China, and I'm pretty sure the American Lawman is made in Taiwan, so these don't fit your specifications, just clarifying that, because I too look at country of origin as important.

You have a Kershaw and a Spyderco already. The Rescue looks to be in between the Delica and Endura in size, and it's only 2 ounces heavier than the Delica. If you like carrying that one, but wish it were smaller/larger, then go for the Delica or Endura. If you want something completely different, try to get a used Benchmade minigrip.

Minigrips come in different handle colors, it's made in the US, and the only thing that it doesn't have on your list is the "flipper" opener, which in your price range will really only be found in Kershaws and the Buck Vantage. You also get to try out the really nice axis lock... New Benchmade Minigrips in different handle colors can be found easily between $60 and $70 online. The biggest complaint I have seen about them is that the handles feel plastic-y, but so does my Endura's handles, so either way you're getting a plastic handle.

Minigrips are very nice knives made by a renowned company with a great warranty, try them out. The extra ten to fifteen dollars is definitely worth it.

Aw, I forgot. If you aren't tired of Spydercos, and want to stick with them, then the Spyderco Native with s30v steel is only $50, and they are made in Golden, Colorado. The only thing that it doesn't follow on your list is the non-black scales request...

if i where you i would save up 20 more bucks and get the manix 2 its made in the usa and has a better steel then these blades your looking at. i only cary usa made knives with the acception of SAK'S so i can not recomend the delica or the cold steel. american jobs are way too important

Decided to go with the Kershaw Skyline, had to pay a bit of a premium to Cabelas for their exclusive orange version. The more I played with the idea of a lockback, I realized how much I liked the ease of liner/frame lock for one handed closing capabilities.
