Hello gentlemen,

I just picked up my second Emerson, a NIB CQC 7. My other Emerson is a CQC 8 and it still has kinda early lock up even after waving it about 40 times. My 7 I just picked up came like its already been worn in, it locks up about %55, is this ok? Bad? Its brand new a 2012 blade.

Looks fine to me, if your worried about it send it back to Emerson, they have some of the best customer service there is.

Looks good to me safe amount of lock up. I picked up a cqc-7 in the stone wash this year right from Emerson and its about the same lock up and thats after 100s of wave openings I would say. Mine has not moved from that same spot once it set in. Id say use it, enjoy it!

Thanks guys! Just seemed kinda weird I get two Emmys and one has early lock up and the other well..Just fine I guess.I did call Emerson to ask and they said if its flush with the tang its bad and to send it in. I think he met flush to the right side of the tang so I dont think ill send it in. Ill just use it and enjoy and if it does keep moving on me then Ill send it in.

That is the way it's supposed to look. What do you find wrong with it? You can't continually use something and expect it to never show wear.

That looks like perfect lockup to me. To me, the most important thing is that there is no blade play. I don't worry too much about how late the lockup is.

Looks like you are good to go... that lock up looks proper.

If you like to tinker.......i've used this trick a few times and it has helped change the lockup just a bit.
It doesn't work every single time but it may be worth a shot... It's worked more than a few times for me.

Begin by loosening up the scale screws and the pivot by 1 complete turn.
Start tightening the screws from the rear most part of the knife moving fwd until you get to the pivot, snug them up 1 at a time and do the pivot last.
Doing this has helped me change the lock up to just a bit earlier in my CQC-15 mini, my A-100 mini, my CQC-7 regular
but not my Horseman or my mini CCQ-7. So, win some loose some...

Good Luck!

The liner engagement looks good to me too. I appreciate the suggestions from dcmartin. I've never had any trouble with an Emerson's lock up, but if I do, I'll give the procedure a try.

Got a new cqc-7 today and lock up was a little later than I wanted. Tried this and it actually worked! Thanks for the tip!

Not bad....about perfect for lock up.....you are good...

That looks like good lockup. The super early hardly touching lock up that people make a big deal about is only good in the eyes of collectors looking for safe queens but not actually for a knife that you are going to use.
Seeing people post questions like this just shows how much misinformation is spewed by safe queen collectors. All you have to do is take a look at the EDC III thread and you can see pleanty of pictures of 'hard use' XM-8's with lockup so early that you could probalby close them without dissengaging the lock by only using the same amount of force that it would take to close a swiss army knife.
You should be far more concerned about whether a liner or frame lock that you purchase is prone to failure than whether or not it has early lock up. And lets face it, it doesn't matter whether most of these knives that people buy come with early lock up because when they never get any real use the lock up never realy wears.
