Hey guys. I just got my first Emerson in the mail and I love it! It's a brown handled Endeavor from the Prestige Line.#22 The fit and Finish is excellent. The handle scales are textured just the way I like them. It's just a great knife. The only issue I have is The liner lock. When the blade is locked open and I press on the thumb ramp with my thumb, using moderate pressure, it gives. Like the liner lock is flexing. It is very noticeable and kind of scary. It locks up with zero play however. If I deploy it using the thumb hole the liner engages the tang at about 25%. If I use the wave feature it locks up at about 50%. Either way I get the flexing. Is this normal for Emerson knives? Has anyone else noticed this in one of their Emersons? What do you think?

Thanks, Chris.

Dear Chris,

Depending on the thickness of the liner, the flexing of the liner is OK. It is when the lock disengages or starts to move in a direction 90° to the rotation of the knife that a liner lock knife has a problem. We have struck the back of the blade with hammers and have folded the liner over, behind the lock but they have folded in behind the blade preventing the knife from closing. This is not to say that any folding knife including liner locks can never fail. Moving parts always equals potential for failure given the right/wrong condition. Don’t worry about the flex, pressure on a blade during cutting puts force against the stop pin which is the way the knives are designed to work.

Enjoy the knife.

Best Regards,

Ernest R. Emerson

Well, there it is. Straight from the horses mouth. Couldn't ask for any better than that. Thanks for the quick reply. Man I love this knife!

Chris- I'm glad Ernest chimed in. Let your knife break in. I just got a Reliant and the lockup is early. She will break-in nicely.

The man has spoken :) Doesn't get more reassuring than that.

Bob Terzuola's Book also has a good explanation of how liner locks work. Worth a read.
